About The Position

The Operations Manager has rotating 24-hour accountability and responsibility for a direct care nursing unit/area providing a link between daily operations and achievement of organizational goals. The Operations Manager is responsible for creating safe, healthy environments that support the work of the health care team and contribute to patient and employee engagement. Provides day-to-day leadership for successful implementation and execution of goals, action plans, and objectives for the department. Responsibilities include daily throughput of unit, patient experience rounding, employee rounding for engagement, quality monitoring of unit, planning of budget and managing expenses. Communicates, organizes, prioritizes, leads, facilitates, coaches and problem solves with reporting staff to ensure that goals and objectives are met. Works with other department leaders to carry out new health care services and performance improvement initiatives. Positively and appropriately represents Carilion Clinic at public and professional meetings.

Requirements

  • Graduate of school of professional nursing.
  • BSN required; for Non-Magnet Facilities, BSN is required within 18 months of hire/transfer.
  • At least 2 years in a clinical nursing role.
  • Currently licensed as Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • In Psychiatry and Behavioral Health, de-escalation training must be successfully completed within 4 months of hire and maintained.
  • Licensure and/or certification in medical or management related discipline preferred.
  • AHA BLS-HCP required; may be required to obtain/maintain BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP based on specific work unit.
  • Demonstrates excellent problem-solving, interpersonal, communication, team leadership, priority setting and work competency skills.
  • Promotes a respectful, inclusive culture of service excellence.

Nice To Haves

  • Licensure and/or certification in medical or management related discipline preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of a department as they relate to goals and objectives.
  • Organize, manage and control departmental functions and resources in a collaborative and participative manner for optimal performance of service.
  • Coordinate resources to provide adequate staffing for department.
  • Demonstrate effective team building and leadership skills.
  • Establish day-to-day priorities and direct staff task assignments.
  • Facilitate teams in problem solving processes.
  • Monitor department budget and expenses, engaging in cost containment ideas.
  • Support facility and organization mission, goals, values, and scorecard objectives.
  • Create a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients and families.
  • Complete daily leadership rounding with a focus on quality and patient experience.
  • Provide real-time staff feedback and service recovery.
  • Participate in the hiring and onboarding of new staff.
  • Manage and maintain unit schedule with a focus on appropriate staffing mix.
  • Facilitate and coordinate daily Interdisciplinary Rounds.
  • Collaborate with medical staff to ensure effective and quality patient care.
  • Escalate concerns to Nursing Unit Director as appropriate.
