Organization: Neonatal Services Job Summary: The Registered Nurse Newborn Screen Program Coordinator applies the nursing process to plan and manage the care of complex patients and programs in a comprehensive manner. Provides consultative services and actively seeks opportunities to collaborate with the health care team. Recognizes complex learning needs and consistently demonstrates effective patient and staff education. Demonstrates and role models effective communication to coordinate patient and family-centered care. Facilitates appropriate follow up care and/or refers patients (within the designated patient population) to the appropriate next level or site of care. Serves in an advocacy role on behalf of patients, families, staff, and caregivers to ensure safe, equitable healthcare provision. Ensures evidence-based care and continuously monitors patient and program outcomes. Furthers professional growth by engaging in learning activities according to Board of Nursing standards. . We are looking for a high-energy, organized, and passionate Newborn Screen Program Coordinator to join our world-class team! In this role, you aren’t just managing a checklist—you are a guardian of the "first step" in a child’s health journey. Your work ensures that every infant in our care receives life-saving screenings with precision and heart. What You’ll Do: Lead the Screening Charge: Take ownership of the ordering and collection process for newborn screens and specialized genetic testing. Master the Data: Use your expertise in Excel and EHR systems to manage vital health information. Whether you're extracting trends or entering critical data, your attention to detail ensures our records are as top-tier as our care. State Health Ambassador: Serve as our primary link to the Tennessee Department of Health. You’ll ensure we remain in 100% compliance and handle monthly reporting that helps shape health outcomes across the state. Build Bridges: Act as a dynamic liaison between internal NICU/Maternity teams and external institutions. Empower Our Team: Share your knowledge! You’ll regularly educate and inspire our nursing and clinical staff on the latest screening techniques and best practices. Clinical Impact: Step into the clinical space weekly to assist with Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) exams, helping protect the precious eyesight of our smallest patients.

Requirements

  • RN License and Bachelors Degree Required
  • Experience in newborn screening preferred
  • Evidence-Based Practice (Advanced): Recognizes, Implements, and evaluates practice changes based on published research. Demonstrates expertise in applying evidence-based practices to challenging and complex situations.
  • Nursing Patient Education (Intermediate): Demonstrates mastery of patient education in practical applications of a difficult nature. Possesses sufficient knowledge, training, and experience to be capable of providing patient health education services without requiring instruction from others. Able to train and educate by setting the example, giving technical instruction, providing leadership, and generally raising the level of performance of others while on the job.
  • Care Planning (Intermediate): Demonstrates ability to anticipate and plan for complex resource needs, identify discrete tasks, set priorities, schedule activities, meet deadlines, and organize work. Collaborates with members of the health care team to identify desired outcomes. Anticipates problems and obstacles before they arise. Able to adapt changes to patient care and area needs with minimal loss of disruption and loss of productivity. Develops creative ideas and takes innovative action to achieve planned goals and objectives. Possesses sufficient knowledge, training, and experience to role model and coach less experienced peers.
  • Nursing Patient Assessment & Evaluation (Intermediate): Demonstrates mastery of patient assessments and evaluations in practical applications of a difficult nature. Conducts primary care patient interviews and physical examinations. Conducts inquiry with a thorough series of questions when patients state an ailment or complaint in order to accurately identify and elaborate on the problem. Possesses sufficient knowledge, training, and experience to role model and coach less experienced peers.

  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary team, attending physicians, families and other professionals to formulate and initiate specialty norms and maintain collaborative practice agreements.
  • Utilizes advanced clinical knowledge to provide or guide safe and effective continuum of care.
  • Collaborates in establishing the plan of care, coordinates and implements care delivery while anticipating patient care and program needs across the continuum.
  • Analyzes comprehensive information pertinent to the patient's care and management to determine nursing diagnosis.
  • Continually utilizes the nursing process to evaluate patient and program progress towards goals and applies appropriate interventions to ensure effective outcomes.
  • Employs strategies to promote health and a safe and healthy environment.
