About The Position

Position Highlights: NT9 NICU Why NICU? Do you love caring for babies? Not only do NICU Nurses get to care for the extremely preterm miracles, but we also get term babies. The NICU requires excellent assessment Skills, critical thinking and a love for educating. This position allows you to sit and bottle feed a baby one day and to care for critically ill infants the next day. You will experience all levels of acuity. Come join a strong, diverse team. Number of beds on unit: 48 beds (23 Level 3 beds and 25 Level 2 beds)) Patient population (age, diagnosis, specifics about unit): Prematurity, Hypoglycemia, Transient tachypnea, Respiratory Distress Syndrome, Feeding difficulties/Delays, Medication Withdrawal, and Whole Body Cooling Typical Nurse to Patient ratio: 1:1 to 1:3 Department culture and resources: Fast paced unit with medically complex patients. Unit relies on strong communication skills between all team members and with Family Members. Supportive teamwork is crucial among team members on the unit to provide high quality care. New and experienced team members empower each other to drive new patient care initiatives and promote a culture of inclusion. Frequent nursing skills/equipment used: Skills include: IV Insertion, NG/OG Insertion/ Strong Assessment Skills/ Medication administration.

Requirements

  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) within 1 year - American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days - American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Licensed Registered Professional Nurse (RN) - Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR)
  • Nursing Diploma
  • RN>1yr

Responsibilities

  • Performs all responsibilities and duties required by unit as specific to the scope of service.
  • Implements procedures and theories related to the specific area of practice.
  • Maintains up-to-date and accurate documentation of nursing care provided to assure the integration of information for use by the healthcare team.
  • Completes initial assessment upon patient admission and develops appropriate plan of care in accordance with unit standards and that is based on patient and family needs.
  • Implements plan of care, nursing interventions, and patient care procedures.
  • Modifies plan of care based upon continuous evaluation.
  • Takes responsibility for patient and employee safety by reporting and/or correcting safety hazards and incidents.
  • Communicates with others directly and in private when necessary to resolve issues.
  • Offers constructive feedback to assist in the professional development of peers, and confers with colleagues to expand knowledge base.
  • Identifies own learning needs and takes initiative to begin appropriate solution.
  • Fulfills all requirements of departmental competencies.
  • Monitors intake and output of neonatal patient assignment
  • Assists mothers with breastfeeding initiation /baby friendly care
  • Administers medications using proper bar code scanning
  • Report on patient assignment during multi-disciplinary rounds
