The Registered Nurse (RN) is a licensed professional who plays a crucial role in coordinating patient care delivery by the healthcare team, utilizing the BSWH nursing professional practice model. The RN is responsible for assessing patients, identifying nursing diagnoses based on their responses to health problems, and developing and implementing individualized care plans. This role is essential in promoting safe passage for patients through the healthcare system, ensuring that they transition without preventable complications or delays. The RN also delegates interventions to healthcare personnel in accordance with the Texas Nursing Practice Act, considering each patient's condition and the competencies of the staff involved. This position is applicable to RNs working in both hospital inpatient and outpatient departments, which operate 24/7, including those with on-call staffing during off shifts. Examples of relevant departments include the GI Lab, Pain Management, Dialysis, Infusion Centers, and IV Services. In this role, the RN will utilize clinical judgment to conduct accurate assessments, prioritize patient and family needs, and develop, implement, and evaluate nursing care plans. The RN will also engage in clinical inquiry to evaluate the quality and effectiveness of nursing practices, participate in quality improvement initiatives, and help facilitate evidence-based practice changes through research and experiential learning. The RN is expected to create a therapeutic environment for patients and families, manage pain effectively, and recognize and incorporate the unique differences of patients into individualized care plans. Advocacy for patients' rights and ethical concerns is a critical component of this role, as is the facilitation of learning for patients, families, and healthcare team members. Collaboration is key, as the RN will work interdependently with colleagues and the community to develop integrated care plans, delegate tasks appropriately, and ensure timely follow-up. The RN will also employ systems thinking to address problems and utilize available resources effectively while considering safety, effectiveness, and efficiency in patient care delivery. Professionalism is emphasized through participation in governance processes, ongoing professional growth, and contributions to the development of peers and colleagues. The RN is expected to demonstrate a commitment to community service and uphold the standards and ethics of nursing practice.
