About The Position

Coordinates the daily activities for the New Life Unit and Pediatrics. To prioritize, plan and perform professional nursing care, resolve patient care issues and interact with patients, families, staff, other team members, and Physicians. To resolve problems with patients, physicians, staff, and other members of the organization. Oversight will be provided for the units and collaboration with the Charge Nurses in the areas.

Requirements

  • Professional knowledge of nursing theory and practice at a level normally acquired through completion of an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Current State Nursing License.
  • BSN required
  • At least five years recent clinical experience in nursing leadership.
  • Provide explanations to the patient and/or significant other.
  • Explain nursing intervention.
  • Communicate with other members of the health team.
  • Analytical skills necessary to develop and implement a plan for nursing care appropriate to the patient, and to solve problems concerning patient’s mental or physical well-being.
  • Ability to concentrate and prioritize, plan and perform professional nursing care, resolve patient care problems, and interact with patients, families, and other team members - often during stressful situations.
  • Ability to manage patient care unit.
  • Must be able to use the following Management Accountabilities/ Competencies: conflict resolution, staff counseling, problem solving, disciplinary process, policy and procedure implementation, teamwork, staff scheduling, support of management peers, interviewing, budgeting process, cost containment skills.
  • May require to take call and work overtime if needed.
  • Must be willing to carry beeper or cell phone to be available after normal business hours.
  • ACLS, PALS and BLS required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide instruction to the staff, physicians and patient and/or significant other.
  • Provide explanation to the staff, physicians and patient and/or significant other.
  • Explain nursing intervention.
  • Establishes the short and long term goals of the NLU and Pediatric Department.
  • Hires, orients, schedules, evaluates, counsels, and recommends the termination of assigned staff with the assistance of Human Resources.
  • Assures that the medical orders and patient’s plan of care is carried out promptly and efficiently.
  • Act on identified problems and/or situations and provide feedback.
  • Promotes an environment in which the patient care team can work cooperatively toward objectives.
  • Seeks assistance from appropriate resource person as necessary in solving clinical and management problems.
  • Directs, supervises, delegates and evaluates nursing care provided to the patients by using professional skills and judgments as required.
  • Ensures that patient care is provided according to policy, procedure, patient care standards on his/her unit.
  • Ensures that care is documented accurately on patient record and plan of care.
  • Coordinates or institutes emergency measures for all codes and disasters occurring on her/his unit.
  • Collaborates with physicians in planning patient’s plan of care.
  • Demonstrates cost conscious use of supplies and ensures that equipment is maintained in optimum condition.
  • Assumes responsibility for unit fiscal management.
  • Prepares departmental FTE and Expense budget in cooperation with the Accounting Department.
  • Identifies staff development needs and recredentialing needs and coordinates programs to meet those needs.
  • Functions as a clinical and managerial resource to guide and validate the independent decision making of the staff.
  • Conducts unit meetings with staff or provides written communication that provides feedback from staff to nursing administration and vice versa.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by authorized personnel as may be required.
  • Ensures quality patient care.
  • Participates in the orientation of new staff and in the clinical experience of staff and students.
  • Recognizes and report’s findings outside the normal range for this age group.
  • Ability to communicate and serves as a liaison between patient’s family and services needed.
  • Involves both patient and caregivers to be included in care.
  • Is aware of the responsibility and mechanism to report abuse specific to this age group which may include financial as well as physical abuse.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and adheres to departmental policies regarding infant identification and security/ abduction prevention.
  • Explains procedures/care, medications, equipment using correct and understandable terminology.
  • Alleviates fears and concerns by addressing all questions demonstrates, teaches staff and documents skill level of staff in the role of RN, LPN, and unlicensed assistive staff during a cesarean section – ability to scrub and circulate during scheduled and unscheduled cases.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in post anesthesia recovery of C/S patients after a spinal or epidural.
  • Demonstrates understanding and applies concepts of cleanliness and sterility when setting up for deliveries.
  • Demonstrates/verbalizes care of a fetal/neonatal death/Empty Arms.
