Summary: The Utilization Review registered nurse performs utilization review and performance improvement functions as determined by supervisor. Analyzes patient records to determine legitimacy of admission, treatment and length of stay in health care facility to comply with government and insurance company reimbursement policies. Confers with medical and hospital personnel as well as payers to determine legitimacy of treatment and length of stay. Abstracts medical records for quality indicator information to aid in improving patient outcomes in conjunction with medical staff and other hospital personnel. Prepares correspondence and reports as needed. The nurse is a professional who is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluation patient care. The Utilization Review registered nurse must have the skills necessary to provide age-appropriate patient care and is accountable to the policies and procedures of the organization.
