About The Position

The lactation consultant will practice in a manner that protects, promotes and supports breastfeeding. LC will use and communicate current evidence-based information. LC will recognize and respect philosophical, cultural, and ethical perspectives influencing the use and delivery of breastfeeding care and services. LC will seek coordination and collaboration with interdisciplinary teams of health professionals (staff nurse, MD). Works with nursing staff on assessments to maximize data needed for proper care plan development and intervention. Understand the evidenced-based Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding Knowledgeable and skilled in the physiology and clinical management of breastfeeding. LC identifies patient needs and priorities for care through assessment. The LC plans and delegates care based on patient needs. The LC evaluates the patient’s response to care and the attainment of/ or progress toward expected outcomes. Regularly attend continuing education classes to maintain IBCLC certification. Assists with maintaining outpatient services for prenatal or continuing care for mothers and/ or infants whether by phone call, outpatient visit, support groups, supply sales, classes, bra fittings. Provides regularly scheduled prenatal breastfeeding classes to prospective breastfeeding women and their support person. As well as participate in providing staff education classes as needed. Participate in community LC meetings Identifies opportunities for Quality Improvement and reports collected data to manager on ongoing basis.

Requirements

  • Education required: Graduate of Accredited School of Nursing
  • License, Certification and/or Registration: Alabama Nursing License
  • BLS required before the conclusion of the orientation period
  • Experience: One year recent experience working with mothers and babies

Nice To Haves

  • IBCLC certification (within 18 months of hire) preferred
