Requirements

  • Current nursing license to practice in Louisiana and as defined by the Louisiana State Board of Nursing.
  • Current American Heart Association BLS certification.
  • 2 years of experience as a registered nurse.
  • 1 year of experience in mother-baby clinical care, antepartum or postpartum or as a lactation consultant.
  • Lactation consultant certification.

Responsibilities

  • Perform bedside lactation rounds, assess lactating and breastfeeding patients, and plan, organize, and deliver lactation management services to all breastfeeding mothers.
  • Communicate with physicians regarding the lactation management of their patients through verbal and written reports acting as a resource for physicians, nurses and dietitians related to breastfeeding issues.
  • Evaluate patient's response to the plan of care and intervene and modify the plan as needed.
  • Follow up with discharged patients for ongoing support and assistance.
  • Develop, implement, evaluate and revise breastfeeding policies and procedures.
  • Assess the educational needs of all breastfeeding and lactating patients and provide the appropriate educational resources.
  • Initiate, consult, and collaborate with available patient education resources to enhance the self-care capability of the breastfeeding patient and family members and document activities.
  • Participate in activities to maintain, expand nursing and lactation knowledge.
  • Participate in decision-making activities related to breastfeeding processes at the hospital.
  • Demonstrate and actively promote compliance with all state and federal regulatory and accrediting agencies (i.e., patient safety, infection control, HIPAA, etc.) and document in accordance with departmental and organizational policies.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and ability to provide comprehensive lactation consultation, breastfeeding techniques, and breastfeeding education.
  • Demonstrate understanding of nutrition and pharmacology related to the aspects of breastfeeding, nursing process and newborn assessment.
  • Demonstrate ability to interpret research for application into current breastfeeding practice.
