About The Position

The lactation consultant is to provide a comprehensive lactation services to meet the needs of professional providers, antepartum, post-partum lactating women and their families within Elliot Hospital and within the community.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing (BSN preferred).
  • Current New Hampshire, compact, or multistate licensure as Registered Nurse required.
  • Certified through the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners required.
  • At least three (3) years of clinical experience in an acute healthcare institution.
  • Ability to obtain BLS qualification during orientation period and maintain during employment.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with Women and Children’s health team and families to establish and maintain a team approach to promote successful lactation.
  • Consults and reports the needs of lactating families to the healthcare providers.
  • Utilizes strategies to support breastfeeding by performing daily lactation rounds on Maternity, NICU, Pediatrics and to other departments within the Elliot Hospital system.
  • Assesses, plans, implements and documents an individualized lactation plan to promote consistent patient care.
  • Demonstrates expertise in care of mother/infant complex breastfeeding problems and at risk infants.
  • Performs follow-up calls with families with breastfeeding problems or at risk.
  • Provides telephone support on 'Lactation Warm Line' regarding breastfeeding issues.
  • Provides outpatients or referral appointments, which includes assessing, planning, implementation, documenting and reevaluates the individualized plan.
  • Establishes and maintains protocols, guidelines related to the standards of care for assisting breastfeeding mothers in all areas of the institute.
  • Evaluates, maintains, and assists with the use of appropriate breastfeeding aids and equipment.
  • Assists in providing ongoing in-service/education for nursing and medical staff to enhance professional development and facilitates successful lactation management.
  • Provides a reference and current research data pertaining to breastfeeding for families and healthcare providers.
  • Provides consultation for the Moms Group and other Elliot services and programs as requested.
