Job Description: The Infusion RN is a licensed professional who provides evidence-based care to adult patients receiving various types of treatments for cancer including chemotherapy and immunotherapy. The Infusion RN works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary healthcare team to provide patient-centered care utilizing knowledge of infusion therapy, standards and principles of oncology nursing practice, standards for safe handling of hazardous drugs, oncology drug therapies and side effects management and critical thinking skills. This employee will demonstrate technical competence, professional and clinical judgement and communication skills, perform appropriate patient assessments, review lab parameters, provide education and support, administer infusion therapies and obtain and maintain appropriate venous access. The Infusion RN is expected to participate in continuous learning and stay abreast of the latest evidence-based practices and infusion therapies.

Requirements

  • Associates Degree in Nursing (ADN) (required)
  • Employees must obtain or enroll in a BSN program within two (2) years of hire
  • Active Kentucky Registered Nurse License or compact license with privileges to work in Kentucky
  • Current ONS Chemotherapy/Immunotherapy certification course provider card required.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) (preferred)
  • Two (2) years of oncology patient care experience (preferred)
  • ONCC certification (OCN, BMTCN and/or CBCN) (preferred)
  • Must obtain certification within two (2) years of employment

Responsibilities

  • Performs nursing assessment and identifies changes in patient status by recognizing signs/symptoms of adverse reactions and side effects
  • Communicates pertinent information concerning treatment and any treatment related side effects.
  • Obtains medication reconciliation with every patient encounter
  • Makes appropriate recommendations based on oncology knowledge, policies/procedures, protocols, standards and collaboration with the interdisciplinary team
  • Obtains physician orders, provides nursing care, documents assessments, provides patient education regarding all modalities of infusion treatment and potential side effects
  • Reviews and identifies abnormal lab values and other diagnostic tests appropriately and communicates to appropriate provider
  • Reviews and verifies appropriate parameters before initiating treatment; performs calculations of ANC, BSA and dosage following established policies and procedures
  • Administers chemotherapy proficiently by all routes (IV, SQ, IM, IP, Central line, Peripheral and PO) in accordance with the Oncology Nursing Society guidelines in addition to other standards (ASCO, INS, OSHA, NIOSH and NCCN); monitors patient for adverse reactions and provides appropriate treatment
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary team including clinical trials to ensure compliance with all treatment requirements and procedures; ensures appropriate documentation is completed and reports changes in patient condition/adverse event to appropriate provider
  • Oversees the flow of the treatment area and ensure patients are seen in a timely manner and addresses any patient issues/concerns and follow-up treatments scheduled
  • Provides education and materials to patients/families specific to treatment and side effects; adjusts teaching style to meet the needs of the patient and family; documents all education
  • Participates in quality and patient safety/experience and performance improvement initiatives; participates shared governance and committees representing the Cancer Center; participates in preparation for various accreditation surveys including FACT, the Joint Commission, NAPBC
  • Ensures personal continuous professional growth as demonstrated by: maintain professional certification in Oncology, maintain chemotherapy provider card, attends and participates in local, regional and national conferences and disseminates information to peers; participates in community activities and cancer center projects and initiatives
  • Maintains annual competencies and completes assigned learning
  • Performs other duties as assigned to help the facility, department and patient within the realm of competency and scope of practice
  • Cross training in radiation oncology unit and oncology specialty clinics
  • Maintains compliance with all company policies, procedures and standards of conduct
  • Complies with HIPAA privacy and security requirements to maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Performs other duties as assigned
