About The Position

Responsible for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care designed to provide quality nursing care for the GI Lab. The RN is specially trained to assist with endoscopy procedures involving the gastrointestinal system. Employee is subject to call back and overtime as required by the hospital. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Prepares procedure rooms with appropriate equipment and supplies for procedure, checking equipment to insure proper working order. Performs and documents initial patient assessment and develops plan of care for each patient conferring with others to promote continuity of care. Demonstrates knowledge of age specific patients and provides appropriate care. Informs physician of patient's arrival, general condition, and pertinent physical and emotional findings. Administers or prepares medications, intravenous fluids, blood and blood components according to hospital policy and procedures. Ensures the proper segregation and safe disposal of hazardous pharmaceutical waste. Assists physical performance of procedures based on knowledge of equipment and skills needed for anticipation of physician's needs. Knowledge of special procedures performed by G.I. Lab nurses. Maintains proper equipment care upon completion of procedures. Communicates information and follows department policies and procedures for admitting and discharging outpatients. Knowledge and ability to transcribe information in permanent log and complete orders and charges on computer. Knowledge of emergency equipment and procedures. Assumes responsibility for following infection control policies in G.I. Lab. Performs charge duties when assigned, delegating responsibilities to support personnel. Assists in orientation of new personnel to unit operation, and serves as a role model as required. Communicates information regarding patients and unit operation to charge nurse and uses proper lines of communication to other departments of the hospital. Cultural practices will be addressed and supported, as long as, practices do not harm others or interfere with the planned course of medical care. Performs related responsibilities as required or directed.

Requirements

  • Skills and proficiency in the principles, concepts, and techniques of the nursing profession. Such proficiency is acquired through completion of an ASN or diploma.
  • BLS certification.
  • Current RN licensure as approved for practice in the State of Tennessee.
  • Minimum of one (1) year G.I. Lab experience is preferred.
  • Satisfactory clinical knowledge in endoscopic procedures.
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures of the hospital, and completion of skills check sheet for designated area as acquired through three (3) months probationary period.
  • Interpersonal skills to perform nursing procedures, provide instruction, comfort, and support in interactions with patients on a continuous basis and to patient's families on a frequent basis.
  • Communication skills in frequent contact with G.I. Lab staff, medical staff, administrative and other hospital departments, and on an occasional basis with community agencies and ambulance personnel.
  • This position demands a high level of performance in exercising judgement relative to patient care, the ability to function under stressful conditions if necessary and the ability to work closely with patients, families, nursing staff and physicians.
  • Contributes to a positive work environment and the overall team effort of the department.

Nice To Haves

  • ACLS is encouraged.
  • Certification of SGNA preferred.
