About The Position

Join UT Southwestern as an ICU Registered Nurse (RN) on our Inpatient Float Pool team and help with our commitment to enhance patient care and comfort. The Inpatient Float Pool is a high-impact, system-level nursing team that ensures safe, responsive, and flexible staffing across both Clements University Hospital and Zale Lipshy Pavilion. Float Pool RNs are cross-trained to support more than 30 inpatient units—including multiple critical care areas, med/surg, oncology, telemetry, progressive care, rehabilitation, and complex specialty services—adapting in real time to fluctuations in census, acuity, and staffing demands. More than a coverage model, the Float Pool is a strategic clinical resource that partners with inpatient leadership, Central Staffing, and Hospital Administration to sustain safe care delivery and support hospital-wide operations. Requirements

  • Graduate of accredited nursing program
  • 1 year of acute med/surg nursing experience
  • (BLS) BASIC LIFE SUPPORT certification, accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) required. Upon Hire and
  • (ACLS) ADV CARDIAC LIFE SUPPORT certification, accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) required. Upon Hire and
  • (RN) REGISTERED NURSE Current Texas RN license, Upon Hire or
  • (NLC) NURSING LICENSURE COMPACT-BNE Current Texas (or BNE Compact State) RN license, Upon Hire
  • (NIHSS) Natl Inst Health Stroke Scale Certification Upon Hire
  • (CPI) CRISIS PREVENTION INSTITUT CER within 180 Days

Responsibilities

  • Performs and accurately documents physical, psychosocial, and emotional assessments. Takes all assessments into consideration age specific criteria.
  • Anticipates patient's and/or patient's family needs and expectations and utilizes these in conjunction with assessment to develop appropriate plan of care for patient. Utilizes critical thinking skills in planning and prioritizing nursing care. Main- tains and utilizes competencies per unit expectation.
  • Identifies and implements appropriate nursing interventions based on completed assessment. Completes documentation of interventions. Coordinates interdisciplinary plan of care. Confers with all mem- bers of health care team in collaborative, fashion, sharing infor- mation and observations of patient and/or patient's family in manner that contributes to optimal patient care.
  • Prioritizes nursing interventions based upon completed assessment. Identifies changes in condition as evidenced by nursing assessment, labs, x-rays, etc. Reports changes and takes follow-up action.
  • Evaluates implemented interventions and modifies care according to evaluation. Documents interventions and modifications to plan of care.
  • Adheres to hospital and/or Department of Nursing policies, proce- dures, clinical pathways and nationally accepted standards of nursing practice while delivering nursing care to patients. Suggests practices to enhance nursing care based on current liter- ature and research.
  • Provides answers and/or education to patient and/or patient's family. Completes documentation of all education provided. Ob- tains feedback and evaluation of understanding from patient and/or family. Demonstrates effective communication with children. Con- tributes to patient and/or family verbal comfort with after dis- charge care.
  • Welcomes and orients patient and/or family to unit. Encourages patient and family participation in care. Reviews plan of care with patient and family every shift. Explains special diets, tests, procedures and medications in easily understood language. Makes frequent rounds on patients, and communicates when will return.
  • Assumes accountability for all actions in workplace. Reports errors promptly and takes appropriate follow-up action to rectify error. Provides supervision of and direction to unlicensed support personnel and nurses new to environment. Delegates duties appro- priately and within legal parameters.
  • Serves as advocate to patient and/or family. Responds to patient's and or patient's family's complaints. Reports complaints to Clin- ical Nurse Manager or their designee. Utilizes chain of command to resolve patient, operational, or personal work related problems.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities as directed. Attends at least 80%25 of scheduled staff meetings and 100%25 of manda- tory educational sessions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
