About The Position

A highly skilled registered professional nurse employed by Erlanger Medical Center who is responsible for direct and/or indirect care of patients being seen and treated at Erlanger. Serves as a clinical resource to nursing, medical, and ancillary staff. Responds to in house codes, Rapid Response Alerts, Code Strokes, Code STEMI's and assists with transferring critically ill patients to the ICU. Responsible for rapidly triaging patients to determine treatment options. Coordinate with physicians on plan of care in an attempt to facilitate care and decrease in-house codes. Will use effective and constructive communication skills to convey evidence based practice at the bedside. May act as a project lead for department objectives and/or process improvement. May provide input and facilitates implementation of the emergency department's goals and objectives. Assist with orientation, competencies, and continuing education for staff. Actively participates in the evaluation of clinical staff under the direction of unit leadership. Participates in regular staff meetings and assists with recruitment and retention of clinical staff. The position of the Critical Care Nurse Clinician is to provide clinical expertise and continuity of care for critically ill and injured patients. This position requires a highly skilled, experienced and qualified nurse with emergency and critical care experience to manage patients in the regional academic Level 1 Trauma Center. He/she collaborates with the physicians to organize care delivery and to facilitate the flow of the patient through the system. Provides input in the development of standardized procedures and guidelines designed to improve patient care and outcomes. Assist the to meet the health system goals and objectives. He/She must possess a thorough knowledge of general nursing principles and practice skills, organizational functions, policies and regulations, current trends and new developments. He/She must be flexible and willing to take on new tasks and participate in new projects. Must be a self-starter that enjoys leading a collaborative team. He/She must be willing to take on many roles; ICU nurse, ED nurse, floor nurse, patient representative, grief counselor, physician liaison, case manager, educator, etc. Flexibility is required as he/she will be asked to care for patients in extreme distress as part of this role while mentoring clinical bedside staff. He/She is expected to participate in educational projects, i.e. in-services with nursing staff, ACLS/TNCC/BLS/Annual credentialing/ATLS etc. He/She will assist in recruitment and retention of staff on the unit, and on boarding of new staff to the department fostering a supportive and collaborative approach. Will identify and monitor staff to develop as a clinical resource nurse. Facilitates open and effective communication with ancillary departments and medical staff. Communicating areas of concern appropriately to leadership and actively identifies solutions for correction. Utilizes appropriate delegation of tasks based on skill level of individual. He/She must be willing to participate in injury prevention efforts coordinated through the Trauma Program. He/She may be utilized to collaborate with the Trauma Registrar and Trauma Program Manager to extract data and put data into NTRACS.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing
  • Minimum of 2 years of clinical nursing experience in adult ICU and/or adult ED
  • Evidence of leadership abilities required
  • Knowledge of general nursing principles and practice skills; knowledge of organizational functions, policies and regulations; knowledge of current trends and new developments; knowledge of principles and practices of nursing; and applicable knowledge of those areas requiring special education
  • Current licensure to practice nursing in the State of Tennessee
  • BLS completed prior to going to the unit/ department and maintained going forward
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) upon hire
  • Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses (ATCN) certification and Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) within 6 months
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification within 6 months
  • Certification by specialty within 1 year of exam eligibility for area of practice
  • Tennessee licensure or multistate licensure from a compact state must be obtained within three months of hire for non-Tennessee residents

  • Previous case management, quality improvement and/or discharge planning experience
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) instructor

  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) instructor
  • Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) certification
