JOB SUMMARY: The Operating Room RN provides direct and indirect patient care to all age groups. The RN assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates the patient care given. Will supervise assigned nursing personnel; collaborate with other health care professionals and coordinate ancillary staff. EDUCATION, CREDENTIALS & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Graduate of school of nursing with reasoning, mathematical, and English language skills of this level of education. Current RN license in the State of Georgia. Nursing skills as defined by the laws governing the practice of nursing in the State of Georgia. Active American Heart Association ACLS & PALS certification within three (3) months of hire. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS : Performs all job responsibilities in alignment with the mission and vision of the organization. Performs other duties as required and completes all job functions as per departmental policies and procedures. Maintains current knowledge in present areas of responsibility (i.e., self-education, attends ongoing educational programs). Attends staff meetings and completes mandatory in-services and requirements and competency evaluations on time. Wears protective clothing and equipment as appropriate. GENERAL SKILLS: Ability to communicate in English, both verbally and in writing. Additional languages preferred. Strong written and verbal skills. Basic Computer Skills WORKING CONDITIONS: General environment: Works in a well-lighted, air-conditioned area, with moderate noise levels. May be exposed to high noise levels and bright lights. Periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads may occur. May be scheduled as needed including overtime. JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES: Operating Room Nurses provide direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles. In addition to general nursing care, responsibilities of OR Nurses include (but are not limited to): Consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans Conducts pre- and post-operative education Serves as the communication liaison to family and members of the operating team Takes and monitors patients’ vital signs Ensures that operating on correct patient and the correct procedure is being performed Provides basic, bedside care Prepares and administers (orally, subcutaneously, through an IV) and records prescribed medications. Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with the policy regarding the administration of medications by a licensed registered nurse. Responds to life-saving situations based upon nursing standards and protocol Records all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms Preps operating room for patient/procedure Initiates corrective action whenever information from monitoring equipment shows adverse symptomatology Monitors patients’ physical and emotional well-being throughout the care continuum Initiates patient education plan, as prescribed by physician. Teaches patients and significant others how to Manage their post-treatment home care needs, self-administration of medication and rehabilitation Performs other position-related duties as assigned, depending on assignment setting The OR Nurse can take the role of: Circulating Nurse, with the following additional duties: Assists in positioning, responding to comfort/safety of patient Provides for accurate care and handling of specimens Observes and enforces strict standards of asepsis Observes, checks and monitors all equipment used during surgery to confirm they are running smoothly Handles patient documentation Inventories all items both pre- and post-surgery Scrub Nurse, with the following additional duties : Selects and handles instruments and supplies used for the operation, passing them to surgeon Inventories all items both pre- and post-surgery Recovery/PACU Nurse, with the following additional duties: Responsibilities include all aspects of patient care following a procedure/post anesthesia including but not limited to: Monitoring vital signs, airway patency, and neurological status Managing pain Assessment of surgical site, if applicable Assessing and maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance Providing a thorough report to the receiving nurse on discharge from recovery Vascular Access Nurse, with the following additional duties: PICC Line and Midline insertion via ultrasound guidance Assistance with routine maintenance of vascular access lines Depending on setting, may also: Direct care provided by licensed practical nurses and nursing aides Float among various clinical services, where qualified and competent Documentation Completes surgical nursing evaluation, pre-op patient documentation prior to patient being taken to surgery (i.e.: nursing assessment). To eliminate wrong-site, wrong-patient, wrong procedure, uses a preoperative verification checklist to confirm that appropriate documents (e.g. medical records, imaging studies) are available. Reviews patient’s chart prior to surgery to ensure all required documentation is completed by surgeon, CRNA, other OR staff as assigned (i.e.: pre-op note by surgeon, pre-op assessment by CRNA). Completes patient’s pre-op checklist: eye glasses, contacts removed, patient NPO past midnight, valuables removed and secured, etc. Documents any medications given/ordered as pre-ops. Provides and documents appropriate education to patients given pre or post-operatively. Completes discharge/ transfer documentation as appropriate. Documents that discharge education has been completed in a manner that ensured patients/family members/ care givers understood discharge instructions. Gives ample time to patients/caretakers for asking questions, receiving current answers. Documents follow-up appointments. Patients/care takers aware of this date. Patient Care Reviews and initiates new medical orders promptly. Clarifies orders as needed. Reports pertinent changes in patient’s status to physician promptly and documents notification. Follows infection control practices. Administers medication safely and accurately utilizing the Five Patient Rights and in accordance with MD’s order. Reassesses as appropriate. Performs nursing skills using appropriate techniques and equipment. Provides quality care during the hours assigned as outpatient RN. Competent of IV insertions in various patient populations. Responsible for following privacy concepts and other policies as stated in the HIPPA policy and procedure. Adheres to policy for accurate and timely completion of all consents. Identifies, sequesters, and reports malfunctioning equipment to the appropriate person immediately. Patient Safety Improves the accuracy of patient identification by using at least two patient identifiers (neither to be the patient’s room number) whenever taking blood samples or administering medication or blood products, or providing treatment or procedures. Improves the effectiveness of communication among caregivers when taking verbal or telephone orders or critical test results that require verification “Verbal Order Read-back and Verified” – “VORV” of the complete order or test result “rb” for “read back” by the person receiving the order or test result. Follows hospital policy and procedure regarding list of abbreviations, acronyms, and symbols not to use. Demonstrates knowledge of high alert medications (concentrated electrolytes, potassium chloride, potassium phosphate, sodium chloride > 0.9%, etc.). Ensures Fall Risk protocol is initiated and followed. Understands and practices current CDC hand hygiene guidelines to reduce the risk of health care-acquired infections. Report’s findings to initiate further actions, i.e. critical lab values within time frame. Reports completely, briefly, and accurately re: patient status when transferring responsibility of care to another person/shift, i.e. hand-off communications. Reconciles home meds on admission, transfer, and discharge. Asses/reassess pain and document appropriately. Notifies M.D. promptly when unrelieved. Educates patient and family of pain relieving techniques. PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Follows Code of Conduct policy. Adheres to dress code; appearance is neat and clean. Completes annual educational requirements. Maintains regulatory requirements. Maintains patient confidentiality at all times. Reports to work on time and as scheduled; completes work within designated time. Wears identification when on duty; uses computerized time clock system correctly. Completes in-services and returns in a timely fashion. Attends annual review and/or skills fair and department in-services, as scheduled. Attempts to end conversations and other interactions in a positive manner; leaves others with a good impression of the Hospital Authority of Miller County and its employees. Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices. Communicates the mission statement of the organization.
