About The Position

The Clinical Staff Leader is a registered professional nurse employed by Erlanger Health System and is responsible for the practice of nursing according to the rules and regulations defined by the state's Nurse Practice Act, Erlanger's Models of Care/Practice, policies and procedures. The nurse is responsible for the delivery of patient care as assigned and for the supervision of other qualified staff to whom the nurse has delegated patient care in the exercise of his/her independent judgement. The nurse addresses physical, spiritual, emotional, and educational needs of the patient and coordinates the plan of care with other healthcare professionals. The nurse is responsible for participation in and completion of all patient safety initiatives appropriate to the position. In addition, the nurse conducts all job responsibilities according to the Mission, Vision, and Values of Erlanger Health System. The Clinical Staff Leader is responsible for managing all aspects of nursing responsibilities during each shift to include delegating nursing assignments, preparing schedules and staff assignments, overseeing patient flow to ensure patient acuity, clinical needs and prioritization of patient care is occurring, and assist with clinical care to support departmental functions, as needed. All Clinical Staff Leaders will be placed on a matrix system, which includes five core competencies: Customer-Focus; Cost-Effective Care; Communication; Competent Care and Compassionate Care plus quality performance indicators that may be organizational and/or unit-based. This matrix will be a guide for nurses based on the Benner Model of novice to expert. It will be utilized to note the RN’s engagement, advancement and professional development.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Minimum of 2 years' clinical experience required.
  • Evidence of leadership abilities required.
  • Knowledge of general nursing principles and practice skills.
  • Knowledge of organizational functions, policies and regulations.
  • Knowledge of current trends and new developments in area of specialty.
  • Current licensure privileges to practice nursing in the state of employment.
  • BLS completed prior to going to unit/department and to maintain ongoing thereafter.
  • NRP certification within 6 months of hire and maintain ongoing thereafter.
  • ACLS required prior to completion of departmental orientation and maintain ongoing thereafter.
  • De-escalation training/certification (example: MOAB) within 6 months and maintain ongoing yearly thereafter.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN).
  • Certification in maternal newborn nursing or Women's health field.

Responsibilities

  • Manage all aspects of nursing responsibilities during each shift.
  • Delegate nursing assignments and prepare schedules and staff assignments.
  • Oversee patient flow to ensure patient acuity and prioritization of patient care.
  • Assist with clinical care to support departmental functions as needed.
  • Maintain continuous updates to Visual Management Board.
  • Ensure bedside reporting occurs daily.
  • Accountable for HCAHPs initiatives implementation.
  • Execute and ensure adherence to appropriate bundles for CLABSI, CAUTI, etc.
  • Ensure Hand Hygiene compliance and bare below the elbows in clinical areas.
  • Participate and lead committees and quality initiatives.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance and escalate problems relating to rules and regulations.
  • Enforce hourly rounding and bedside shift report.
  • De-escalate situations and implement service recovery.
  • Assist in recruitment and retention of staff on unit.
  • Facilitate open and effective communication with ancillary departments and medical staff.
  • Conduct performance reviews in collaboration with Department management.
  • Facilitate appropriate orientation opportunities for new staff.
  • Manage productivity by flexing staffing based on census and acuity.
  • Monitor supply costs to maintain within budget.
  • Assist with community outreach programs and opportunities.
