About The Position

The nurse educator is responsible for planning, coordinating, evaluating and revising the centralized orientation and other education programs for staff in Patient Care Services. In addition, the nurse educator serves as a liaison with education institutions using Mercy Hospital and Medical Center as a student educational site. These duties are to be performed in a highly confidential manner, in accordance with the mission, values and behaviors of Mercy Hospital and Medical Center and the attributes of Careful Nursing. Employees are further expected to provide a high quality of care, service, and kindness toward all patients, staff, physicians, volunteers and guests.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required.
  • Current RN License in the State of Illinois required.
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • 5 years direct patient care experience demonstrating clinical expertise in area of interest.
  • Current CPR certification required.
  • Ability to respond quickly to changes in nursing policies requiring adaptation of orientation program.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree Preferred.
  • Adult education experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Plans and conducts a variety of in-service orientation and educational programs to meet the needs of Patient Care Services staff at all levels.
  • Evaluates and revises centralized programs and orientation programs as required to maintain current content and congruency with the patient care model.
  • Assesses educational needs of staff throughout Patient Care Services and develops plans for learning experiences appropriate for meeting recognized needs.
  • Plans and prepares curriculum content and course outlines in conformance with program objectives and accreditation standards.
  • Modifies and updates existing educational programs and/or patient education materials or recommends modifications as appropriate.
  • Assists Patient Care Directors in the planning and teaching of nursing skills and procedures particular to a specific patient population.
  • Serves as a resource person to the Patient Care Directors and nursing staff regarding educational activities and new nursing techniques.
  • Assumes responsibility for the care and maintenance of departmental equipment, supplies, work areas and facilities.
  • Requisitions supplies and equipment to support class instruction.
  • Selects and organizes teaching aides to include films, slides, charts, anatomical models, and nursing supplies and equipment.
  • Maintains required departmental records, reports and statistics as appropriate.
  • Ensures that the classroom serves as an appropriate learning environment.
  • Keeps abreast of new developments in training techniques, methods and programs for possible application in nursing education programs.
  • Coordinates clinical experiences for undergraduate/graduate nursing students and maintains course files.
  • Serves as hospital liaison to CPR Community Training Center, maintaining staff records and submitting quarterly reports.
  • Serves on hospital-wide committees as educational consultant as appropriate.
  • Ensures that care is provided for all patients incorporating the attributes of Careful Nursing (Trustworthy collaboration, Health education, Perfect skill in fostering safety and comfort, Participatory – authoritative management).
  • Carries out other duties related to patient care and unit operations as assigned.
