About The Position

PURPOSE STATEMENT Responsible for the delivery of safe, effective, and quality patient-family centered care in the OR and other areas of perioperative services for all patient populations. One circulating nurse is dedicated to each patient for the duration of each surgery. The circulating nurse is responsible for managing all nursing care within the operating room, observing the surgical team from a broad perspective, and assisting the team to create and maintain a safe, comfortable environment for the patient’s surgery.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing
  • Currently licensed to practice as a professional Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of Missouri or be eligible to practice as a graduate nurse in the State of Missouri
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS required.
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) ACLS or obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Knowledgeable regarding operating procedures or willingness to learn.
  • Knowledgeable regarding computer documentation.
  • Must be self-motivated and have the ability to work within the established policies, procedures and practices prescribed by the hospital/clinic.
  • Must be able to sit and stand intermittent 10 to 12 hours a day.
  • Must be able to use standard office equipment, including the telephone and computer keyboard.
  • Continuously works under pressure of near 100% accuracy while meeting inflexible deadlines.
  • Continuously utilizes manual/bi-manual dexterity, near vision, speech, and hearing.
  • Frequently stands, walks, sits and utilizes eye/hand coordination and color definition.
  • Full range of body motion, regularly required to lift and/or carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Pushing/pulling heavy objects.
  • Exposure to blood and body fluids, communicable diseases, chemicals, radiation, and repetitive motions
  • Occasionally walks on uneven surfaces.

  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) PALS preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Promote the mission, vision, and values of the organization.
  • Ensure patient needs are met in accordance with the instructions of the surgeon and facilities’ policies and procedures.
  • Act as a patient advocate and maintain privacy and confidentiality of individuals and health information.
  • Demonstrate respect for co-workers and assist in maintaining a positive work environment.
  • Communicate with courtesy when interacting with patients, physicians, or vendors.
  • Coordinate and perform activities appropriate within the OR.
  • Provide direct clinical care to patients in surgical rooms.
  • Delegate tasks according to the state Nurse Practice Act and job descriptions.
  • Prepare the operating room for procedures each day; ensuring all supplies, implants & equipment are present and ready.
  • Assist with efficient Operating Room turnover between cases to prepare for the next case.
  • Document nursing care accurately, completely, and legibly.
  • Assist in maintaining preference cards and charges for procedures.
  • Maintain required competencies.
  • Identify any potential unsafe situation and notify supervisor immediately.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
  • Participate in quality review and performance improvement projects.
  • Expected to serve as sitters as needed, following the successful completion of designated sitter education and training provided.
  • Perform other essential duties as assigned.
