The Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit is a high-acuity 36 bed cardiac surgical unit focused on fostering continuous learning while developing high level critical thinking and technical skills. Registered Nurses maintain significant competencies to operate at the top of the nursing license. Specialty device training includes the management of long term left ventricular assist devices, right and left sided Impellas, intra-aortic balloon pumps, continuous renal replacement therapy, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. The unit supports a culture of engagement and professional growth by encouraging participation in unit/organizational committees, councils, and other professional organizations. Teamwork, accountability, and collaboration are common practice expectations. Registered Nurses and Nurse Technicians work closely with physicians, advanced practice providers, respiratory therapists, physical and occupational therapy, amongst several other disciplines to ensure individualized high-quality care. Continuous quality improvement initiatives provide a landscape for innovation and drive the implementation of evidence-based practices. Peer to peer relationships is developed by working side by side to provide an exceptional experience for our patients and their loved ones.

  • Utilize the framework of the nursing process to provide professional nursing care.
  • Incorporate patient-family centered care principles to assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and discharge.
  • Provide quality patient care under the direction of the Nurse Leader according to Corewell Health policies and procedures.
  • Recognize the impact of nursing care and patient/family partnerships on patient outcomes.
  • Partner with and utilize patient/family input and goals in planning plan of care.
  • Develop teaching strategies for patient/family and document education and learning appropriately in health record.
  • Associates in Nursing Required
  • Bachelors in Nursing Required within 5 years
  • MI Registered Nurse (RN) Required
  • AHA or ARC Basic Life Support (BLS) Required within 90 days
  • AHA Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Required within 6 months
  • Specialty Certification highly recommended within 2 years
  • 6+ months of inpatient RN experience preferred
