About The Position

The 6 East Cardiac Intensive Care Unit/Progressive Care Unit provides care for critically ill patients recovering from acute myocardial infarction (MI), cardiogenic shock, congestive heart failure (CHF), cardiac arrest, and various percutaneous interventions. The patient population includes those suffering from heart attacks, heart failure, arrhythmias, and other cardiac conditions in a progressive care setting. The treatment team consists of registered nurses (RNs) and patient care technicians on the day shift. RNs are required to take Critical Care Core classes or test out, and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification is required.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a school of nursing that qualifies for the NCLEX exam to become licensed as a Registered Nurse.
  • Current State of Michigan Registered Nurse (RN) License.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • ACLS certification required for specific departments.
  • Graduation from an accredited nursing program.
  • Effective January 1, 2013, all new hires must have a BSN degree or agree in writing to obtain their BSN within five years from the date of hire or transfer to an RN role.
  • Knowledge of nursing theory, practice, and age-specific needs.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to maintain collegial relationships with coworkers and therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
  • Critical thinking skills necessary to perform principal duties and responsibilities.

Nice To Haves

  • BSN preferred.
  • Experience as a Canadian Registered Nurse is encouraged.

Responsibilities

  • Gathers and analyzes patient information.
  • Develops, implements, evaluates, and revises an individualized plan of care.
  • Uses teach back methodology to educate patients and families.
  • Actively seeks to prevent potential hospital-acquired conditions.
  • Effectively communicates patient status, priority goals, and interventions during consultations, rounds, and handoffs.
  • Follows all HIPAA policies and procedures.
  • Behaves in accordance with the Mission, Vision, and Values of St. Joseph Mercy Hospitals.
