JOB SUMMARY: The Cardiology RN manages and directs patient care and provides technical support in the Cardiology Department and Cath Lab, before, during, and after invasive diagnostic/interventional procedures. This position includes the role of: circulator and hemodynamic monitor in the Cath Lab, and Radiology procedures; responsible for all nursing needs of the Radiology department, including assessment and rapid interventions of Radiology patients with a change in medical condition; assists in Cardiology procedures as needed. The Cardiology RN reports directly to the Director of Cardio-Respiratory Services. QUALIFICATIONS: Education: RN graduate of Accredited School of Nursing. Licensure/Certification: Must have valid, current license by the Missouri State Board of Nursing. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and ACLS certification. Meet criteria for supervision of treadmill or pharmacological stress testing. Work Experience: Acute nursing experience in ICU, CCU, Emergency Department. RESPONSIBILITIES/JOB DUTIES: Follows policy and procedures for all care given in the diagnostic areas. Performs complete physical assessment on all patients admitted in the diagnostic area and prior to procedures. Evaluates lab results on patients and notifies physician of abnormal findings. Provides comprehensive patient and family teaching for all procedures pe. Obtains written documentation of patient consent to procedures performed. Administers medications as ordered by the physician in a safe and competent manner. Follows policy and procedures for the administration of IV conscious sedation. Function as the treadmill or pharmacological stress testing nurse for Nuclear and Echo/Vascular. Duties to include: confirming the appropriateness of the testing protocol, monitor the EKG and vital signs during testing, respond effectively to adverse testing reactions, determine appropriate time for isotope injection, terminate the test at the appropriate end point, monitor post-test vital signs for return to baseline values, provide the interpreting physician with detailed and accurate data regarding the stress test results and administer echocardiogenic contrast materials per protocol. Performance of EKG, Graded Exercise Test (treadmill and pharmacologic), 24 Hour Holter Monitor hookup Performance, 24 Hour Holter Monitor scanning, and Event Monitor education and hook-up. Completes a baseline patient assessment prior to the procedure, notifying physician of abnormal findings. Completes post procedure assessment and reports to appropriate nursing unit. Provides appropriate nursing care to include: parenteral therapy, medication administration and an ongoing patient assessment. Provides pre and post care of Cath Lab patient. Assist physician in performance of invasive diagnostic/interventional procedures. Maintains sterility of operative site and supplies. Operates all patient monitoring systems before, during and after procedures. Develops nursing care protocols and patient/family teaching tools. Maintains professional communication and relations with all hospital personnel, physicians, patients and families. Operates the Radiology Information and the Order Entry Systems as they relate to the Cath Lab/Special Procedures. Contributes positively to the department financial performance. Performs daily checks of equipment and narcotics. Other duties as assigned. REQUIRED STAFF COMPETENCIES: Demonstrates support for organizational and departmental mission.
