About The Position

Works with minimal supervision to promote safe patient and staff processes and appropriate plan of care guidance for behavioral or disruptive events across the Health System.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited Nursing program
  • 3 years of behavioral health nursing experience.
  • (BLS) BASIC LIFE SUPPORT course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC). Upon Hire
  • UTSW's de-escalation training completion within 6 months of hire date.

Nice To Haves

  • 5 years of behavioral health nursing experience.
  • Certified psychiatric nurse.

Responsibilities

  • Provides proactive assistance for disruptive/ behavioral care through rounding and response to staff concerns.
  • Serves as the lead responder for behavioral emergency calls (or acute behavioral events) throughout the hospital. Provide on-site assistance/management of crisis situations to prevent or minimize disruption of services.
  • Serves as a clinical expert and resource in the specialized care of patients with behavioral concerns through assessment, communication, immediate interventions, patient and/or family education, and support.
  • Assists with plan of care for behavioral or disruptive patients across the inpatient and emergency room settings including education directed towards identified knowledge deficits, treatment planning, and discharge planning.
  • Collaborates with staff to prevent escalation of behavioral concerns, including thorough rounding and intervention.
  • Collaborates with multidisciplinary team, patient, and family on behavioral plans of care to decrease disruptive events.
  • Assists in investigation of patient/visitor concerns as they relate to behavior issues and assist in implementing appropriate courses of action, taking corrective action in situations requiring immediate intervention, and optimizing service satisfaction of patients, families, providers, and staff. Collaborates with clinical and support staff to foster delivery of quality care, communicating issues identified by front line staff to appropriate administrative team and assisting staff in identifying clinical experts for specific patient population concerns.
  • Provides support and resources to staff post event, including debriefing with staff and patient/visitors involved in behavioral events, in collaboration with unit leadership.
  • Attends scheduled case reviews and treatment team meetings when consulted and/or appropriate.
  • Completes and maintains de-escalation program instructor training (provided by UT Southwestern Medical Center) and provides formal instruction to staff.
  • Provides just-in-time training/education of de-escalation training as part of rounding and response to behavioral concerns.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
