Job Summary The purpose of this position is to develop, implement, interpret and manage policies, procedures and programs designed to mitigate risk and potential liability associated with university activities and initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible risk management experience including claims management experience required.
  • Valid CA driver’s license.
  • Employees who are required to operate motorized vehicles and/or use their personal vehicle more than once a month on university business are required to take a mandatory Defensive Driving course and enroll in the DMV Employee Pull Notice (EPN) Program.
  • Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.
  • Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures.
  • Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."
  • The ideal candidate will have strong oral and written communication skills to clearly convey detailed information to individuals with varying levels of familiarity with campus procedures, insurance terminology, loss control techniques, state regulations, and potential outcomes. Additionally, they must be able to objectively analyze facts and, in collaboration with university managers, legal counsel, and other stakeholders, develop effective risk management strategies and recommendations that support the University’s interests.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate in Risk Management (ARM) – National Professional Designation or Designation as a Certified Risk Manager (CRM).
  • Risk Management experience in the public sector.

Responsibilities

  • Risk identification, assessment and minimization - Serves as the primary contact for the campus community and public for campus-related risk management issues. Analyzes issues and makes decisions/recommendations to address identified risks. Interprets various laws, regulations and policies to develop risk management policies, programs, procedures. for the University.
  • Tort liability and insurance program management - Responsible for the management of the campus tort liability and commercial insurance programs. This will include all fiscal responsibility related to Risk Management. Commercial insurance programs include, but are not limited to, property insurance, inland marine, student professional liability insurance, foreign travel liability insurance, vehicle insurance, special event insurance and student travel accident insurance. Each of these commercial insurance programs requires a different set of procedures and processes to obtain coverage and manage claims.
  • Legal Holds - Responsible for drafting legal hold notice advising campus individuals that they may be called to provide information and preserve all documents that may be called upon for any lawsuits against the CSU. Coordinates electronic legal hold requests with Information Technology. Represents the University during small claims and restitution legal proceedings. The Risk Manager coordinates this effort with the University Counsel or other members of the Chancellor's Office General Counsel team.
