The Risk Management Specialist supports the adverse event reporting process, including patient, visitor, public safety, and facility-related events, utilizing the Risk Management database. This role involves investigating adverse events to enhance patient care quality, improve health outcomes, promote safety, and mitigate liability exposures, all in compliance with Advocate Policy. The specialist reviews event reports, identifies those requiring claims notification or quality/peer review referral, and provides education on the electronic event reporting system. They analyze risk data, correct database information, and notify management of serious events, potentially participating in Serious Safety Event Response teams. The role also involves creating event summary reports for trend identification and assisting with medical device recalls and FDA Med Watch reporting. Collaboration with Public Safety and Security is key to identifying and investigating safety incidents. Additionally, the specialist manages claims and insurance responsibilities, supporting legal counsel and claims administrators in investigations, preparing for defense, and ensuring timely reporting of all claims and lawsuits to Advocate Insurance Segregated Portfolio Company (AISPC). They also assist with annual professional liability insurance renewals and respond to subpoenas. The specialist is responsible for daily activities within the site Risk Management program, providing consultation on risk management and safety issues, identifying compliance concerns, and participating in the resolution of operational challenges. They serve as a resource for medical and legal inquiries, participate in resolving treatment issues (e.g., AMA, consent, bioethical issues), and identify situations for disclosing unanticipated outcomes. The role includes participation in cause analysis and quality improvement activities, compiling data for health outcomes initiatives, and assisting with proactive risk assessments. The specialist conducts routine unit/department rounds to identify liability exposures, provides 24/7 on-call coverage, and assists with departmental reporting and educational programs for associates and physicians on risk management topics. They also work with Patient Relations and Language Services to address patient complaints and potential liability exposures, and notify the Legal Department of issues requiring legal opinion or notification.
