About The Position

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is hiring a Rigger within the Facilities division. As a member of LBNL’s Crane & Rigging Department, you will be an integral part of our highly specialized rigging team, supporting the lab’s ongoing scientific experiments, as well as day to day operations. You will learn to rig, lift, move, and set high value/high consequential assets throughout the lab, as well as support all other crafts, using forklifts, gantry cranes, and other specialized equipment. Requirements

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in crane and rigging with an emphasis on rigging in an industrial and/or scientific research environment OR completion of apprenticeship program or comparable industrial or military training which demonstrates journey level rigging, knowledge, skills and abilities within an industrial/commercial construction environment.
  • Must have a valid California Driver’s License.
  • Knowledge of basic lift plans, working around equipment such as forklifts, mobile cranes, stationary auto-start equipment i.e., electric motors, fans, gears, pumps, blowers, cooling towers.
  • Experience working in an industrial and/or scientific research environment.
  • Knowledgeable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements typical for job sites.
  • Ability and knowledge to follow instructions, work safely, and make independent decisions with minimum supervision.
  • Attend and pass LBNL sponsored forklift, rigging and signal person certification programs.
  • Ability to climb stairs, ladders, scaffolds, work at heights, in confined spaces, around rotating equipment, under fluorescent lights.
  • Able to bend, stoop, kneel, crawl, have manual dexterity in both hands; able to wear and use protective clothing, safety equipment; lift 50 lbs. to chest height.
  • Able to use and communicate clearly over telephone and two-way radio. Have basic computer skills; use a keyboard, familiar with Word, Gmail, and Calendar Apps.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to obtain DMV Class A or Class B License with the following endorsements, Tanker and Hazardous Material.
  • Familiar with the operation and maintenance of complex tools, machines and equipment such as: Stair Climber, Pallet Jack, Gantry Crane, Tuggers, Tri-Glide, ChainFall, Come-A-Long, Torque Wrench, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Burke Bar, Shackles, Slings, Spreader Bar, Dunnage and Wedges.
  • Experience in operating radio control operated bridge cranes.
  • Experience forklift operator.
  • Understand how to give and receive basic hand signals, and radio commands.

Responsibilities

  • Provide a wide range of rigging support.
  • Provide rigging support including, but not limited to, multi-ton shielding blocks, high value/high consequential scientific equipment, portable structures, optical tables, motors, fans, blowers, and electrical ground carts.
  • Assist in the assembly and disassembly of equipment used in scientific experiments, radiation shielding, personnel enclosures.
  • Support the fabrication and testing of equipment including, but not limited to, experimental and research apparatus, specialty rigging equipment, and prefab vendor supplied equipment for laboratory expansion.
  • Operate pendant and radio controlled bridge cranes.
  • Operate forklifts and other specialized lifting and machinery moving equipment.
  • Through lab supported training programs, obtain and maintain forklift, rigging, and signal person certifications.
