About The Position

The Washington State Office of Public Defense (OPD) is seeking a conflict attorney to provide representation for indigent clients in involuntary treatment act proceedings under RCW 71.05. This position is part-time, with an expected assignment of 1-2 cases per month, and offers an hourly compensation of $124/hour. The attorney will represent clients at the University of Washington's Center for Behavioral Health and Learning (UWCBL) and Olympic Heritage Behavioral Health (OHBH). Contractors are responsible for all overhead costs, while OPD provides access to legal resources and covers authorized expert and litigation costs.

Requirements

• Licensed member of the Washington State Bar Association (WSBA) in good standing.
• At least one year of experience as a public defender, prosecutor, or private counsel in civil commitment practice.
• Trial counsel in at least five civil commitment initial hearings.
• Experience as lead counsel in at least one felony trial or co-counsel in a commitment hearing or jury trial.
• Experience in cases involving mental health issues and expert witnesses.
• Familiarity with Superior Court Civil Rules and/or Superior Court Civil Commitment Rules.
• One year of appellate experience or demonstrated legal writing ability.

Responsibilities

• Provide legal representation to indigent clients in involuntary commitment proceedings.
• Manage 1-2 cases per month as assigned.
• Utilize current technology for electronic documentation and reporting.
• Comply with Washington Supreme Court Standards for Indigent Defense.
