About The Position

The Lead lifeguard is responsible for performing a variety of duties to prepare the pool for the demands of the group present. The lifeguard is responsible for performing the duties as outlined in the analysis and works 2-10 hours a week. Lead lifeguard will be present at the time of all swim lessons. Work is performed at a self-controlled pace but may vary depending on the demands of the job required. The H-F Park District’s mission statement is “to enhance the quality of life through diverse recreational opportunities, facilities and parks while caring for the environment”. The Lead lifeguard reports directly to the Aquatics Coordinator.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a current CPR certification.
  • Must have current Lifeguard Training card or equivalent.
  • Must be punctual, responsible, honest and trustworthy.
  • Must be able to communicate with the public and fellow staff in a courteous manner, state rules firmly and diplomatically.
  • Represent the Park District in a professional manner in both job and appearance.
  • Exercise good personal habits of cleanliness and behavior.
  • Must have a current CPR card.
  • Must have current Lifeguard Training card or equivalent.
  • STANDING: Very frequent
  • SITTING: Very frequent
  • WALKING: Very frequent
  • LIFTING: Must be able to lift equipment up to 50 lbs.; 75 lbs. with assistance
  • STOOPING: All clean-up and maintenance.
  • REACHING: Frequent
  • CLIMBING: Frequent
  • VERBAL: Communicate with other guards, need to speak loudly to swimmers
  • VISION: Must maintain vision standard of 20/30 binocular, corrected or uncorrected

Nice To Haves

  • Certification as a StarGuard lifeguard or comparable qualification on water instruction is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide outstanding customer service to our internal and external guests by providing friendly, responsive, courteous, and helpful service.
  • Protect the safety of swimmers.
  • Keep attention on the swimmers at all times when on duty.
  • Enforce all pool rules in the water and on the deck or in locker rooms.
  • Perform any necessary emergency procedures and first aid.
  • Conduct all in-service training sessions and keep logs in Starguard
  • Attend required staff meetings.
  • Set up equipment and/or put it away, including lesson bins and taking down and putting up lane lines and keep the deck picked up at all times.
  • Substitute for fellow lifeguards and swim instructors as needed.
  • Greet families, print rosters and take attendance on the day of scheduled swim lessons.
  • Schedule and Maintain schedule of Swim Instructors and Lifeguards.
  • Check safety equipment at the beginning of each shift.
  • Carefully complete accident reports after rendering whatever first aid is needed. Remember, with serious accidents, the Fitness Operations Supervisor or RFC Manager must be notified.
  • Each lifeguard is responsible for fully understanding emergency procedures, pool rules, rescue techniques and minor first aid and will be expected to demonstrate any of these things at any given time.
  • Lifeguards will always wear their issued staff t-shirt along with their whistle while on duty.
  • Be able to assist, even if off duty, with any emergency.
  • Must be able to perform and maintain all of the required skills and skill tests of their certification.
  • Adheres to all policies and procedures as outlined in the Safety Manual, Policy and Procedures Handbook and Employee Manual.
  • Other related job duties as assigned.
  • The lifeguard must be able to follow directions from supervisor and co-workers.
  • The lifeguard must be able to give directions to co-workers.
  • The lifeguard must use good safety awareness and judgment.
