About The Position

The Department does NOT sponsor Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) Optional Practical Training (OPT) (Form I-983) or non-immigrant work visas for this position. This is advanced, specialized work in the Suspicious Filers Group within the Department of Revenue involved with analyzing tax returns for complete accurate information. Communicates with all levels of staff including management to resolve tax issues. Expert in specific tax categories, provide technological and procedural assistance to resolve complex tax issues. Collaborates regarding complex tax situations involving statutes, regulations, and other policy matters. Ensure returns are processed efficiently, accurately, and timely. Updates and writes procedures as needed. Provides institutional knowledge and system changes suggestions required to implement and support multiple tax programs. Receive and provide written and verbal communication to resolve taxpayer filings.

Requirements

  • Associate’s Degree in business plus two years of experience with tax return preparation, business ownership and operation, account research and analysis, or interpretation and application of policies, laws, rules, or regulations.
  • Three years of increasingly responsible experience with tax return preparation, business ownership and operation, account research and analysis, or interpretation and application of policies, laws, rules, or regulations.
  • Knowledge of: processes and/or procedures for processing tax returns; mathematics and accounting; resources available for researching tax laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Skills in: identifying trends and/or unique sets of data; recognizing priorities; good judgment and logic in solving problems.
  • Ability to: communicate to express clear and concise ideas; utilize interpretive techniques to determine information sought; organize and verify tax data/information from computer generated reports; set priorities; relate effectively with people representing a wide variety of backgrounds; interpret difficult tax situations for taxpayers; determine why a taxpayer is not following the tax laws; use independent judgment; monitor the work of others.

Responsibilities

  • The Revenue Senior Agent resolves complex issues that cannot be resolved by teammates and answers complex processing questions from management and staff within the agency regarding tax programs. This includes written correspondence and phone calls with taxpayers, accountants, attorneys, and other authorized representatives.
  • Continual monitoring of teammates' daily work performance and providing input to supervisors for initial probation and performance evaluations.
  • Identifies internal programming and software issues and resolves with IT staff.
  • Extensive one on one training of teammates.
  • Is a work leader, plans, directs, and assigns work with limited supervision.
  • Responsible for making computer system suggestions to improve the accuracy and efficiencies for processing tax returns, testing new changes prior to implementation to ensure a proper outcome.
  • Create and maintain procedures for all processes in assigned area.
