About The Position

Department of Revenue is recruiting for a Revenue Agent 1 position (multiple positions). We are looking for talented, detail-oriented individuals to join our Tax Collections Section Division in the Tax Collections Unit. This position is headquartered in our Salem office; however, the successful candidate may be eligible for in-state hybrid work. Hybrid work consists of performing duties onsite in a standard office environment and working remotely. In order to be considered for Department of Revenue recruitments, you must reside within the state of Oregon. Current Revenue employees who live outside of Oregon may apply and will be considered. If you possess language skills in Spanish, you are encouraged to apply!! We offer bilingual differential pay, which is an extra 5% of the employee’s base pay and is contingent on passing the required language test. Please note, bilingual language skills are encouraged but not required for these positions.

Requirements

  • Six months of customer service or call center experience that includes explaining customer balances and identifying discrepancies in the account balance, requesting payment on current or past-due accounts, or setting up payment arrangements; OR One year of customer service or call center experience which involved explaining policies, laws, rules or regulations; and resolving problems or complaints, which included dealing with customers/clients who were confused, frustrated, or hostile; OR One year of experience working in support of a collection function, or collection work performed as part of other major responsibilities.
  • NOTE: Some positions with the Department of Revenue require skill in speaking, writing, and understanding languages other than English.

Nice To Haves

  • Excellent customer service skills including in-person, over the phone and through electronic correspondence.
  • Call Center experience working on an automated call distributor
  • Simultaneously using a computer to enter/retrieve/document information on customer accounts while assisting a customer on the phone.
  • Experience explaining complex laws, rules, regulations and/or policies.
  • Ability to work independently without constant supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the public in person, by correspondence, and by telephone to answer in-depth questions regarding collection procedures of various tax programs, and options available to taxpayers to resolve their tax liabilities.
  • Initiates and conducts searches and investigations to locate taxpayers.
  • Initiates and responds to contact with taxpayers, employers, attorneys, banks, field agents, and other agencies by telephone or correspondence to affect collections concerning tax collection and filing enforcement on multiple tax programs.
  • Negotiates and establishes payment agreements based on the taxpayer’s ability to pay.
  • Utilizes on-line computer requests to issue docketed warrants, garnishment of assets including bank accounts, contract payments, commissions, rents, and wages.
  • Recommends settlement offers, cancellations and waivers of tax, penalty and interest, relief under doubtful liability and injured spouse in accordance with tax law, administrative rules, and procedures.
  • Monitors cases for collections, payments, adjustments, refunds, offsets, or Bankruptcies.
