Under general supervision, this Retirement Specialist I position processes distributions, including refunds, and calculates annuity benefits, according to the Nebraska Retirement Statutes; functions collaboratively to problem-solve with their team and manager; works closely with our records keeper and their software system; prepares written correspondence to members and reporting agents; and performs related work as assigned. Requirements

  • At least one year of coursework, training, and/or experience in office support functions, including providing customer service, and/or experience providing service to recipients about benefit plan guidelines.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Possess good reasoning skills
  • Knowledge and/or experience with Microsoft Office Suite products (Word & Excel)
  • Knowledge of general math and enjoy working with numbers
  • Ability to perform math calculations
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to have regular attendance and punctuality
  • Ability to interact with persons of varying degrees of understanding, regarding the retirement plan(s)
  • Ability to interact for extended periods of time using empathy, tact, and courtesy, when communicating with members, co-workers, and the public, in person and over the phone
  • Ability to maintain positive internal and external relationships

Nice To Haves

  • Experience processing retirement plan refunds, annuities, and/or other retirement distributions.
  • Experience composing and conducting business correspondence and communications.

Responsibilities

  • Process retirement plan distributions.
  • Process regular retirements in the State and County plans, including validating applications, calculating, and auditing benefit calculations.
  • Enter and audit distributions for the Deferred Compensation Plan (DCP).
  • Enter and audit refunds for all retirement plans.
  • Respond to and request information from plan members and employer reporting agents via written and verbal communication.
  • Verify service credit and salary information utilizing multiple software systems.
  • Calculate purchase of service and military service.
  • Prepare QDROs, by splitting accounts and calculating estimates for the member and the alternate payee.
  • Prepare necessary information for Board review on applicants seeking Disability retirement.
  • Respond to member inquiries regarding plan laws, agency policies and procedures, and pending legislation for the Public Employees Retirement Systems.
  • Explain the workflow processes for members and reporting agents.
  • Disseminate tax information and respond to additional questions from members.
  • Process member requests for information and other miscellaneous requests.
  • Additional duties related to retirement processes may be assigned.
