Requirements

  • Medical Degree: A Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree.
  • Completion of a residency in Ophthalmology.
  • Vitreoretinal Fellowship.
  • Valid New Mexico medical license to practice as an ophthalmologist or ability to attain prior to starting.
  • Board Certification in Ophthalmology.
  • Proficiency in diagnostic techniques, surgical skills, patient management, staying current with medical advancements, retina injections and laser retina procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough examinations to diagnose retinal diseases such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal detachment.
  • Interpret results from tests like Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), fluorescein angiography, and visual field testing.
  • Administer or prescribe medications and provide intraocular injections for conditions like wet age-related macular degeneration.
  • Perform Panretinal Photocoagulation and focal lasers as indicated by pathology.
  • Educate patients and their families about treatment options and disease management.
  • Work with other healthcare professionals to manage systemic diseases affecting the eye, such as diabetes.
  • Keep up with the latest research and advancements in retinal disease treatment.
  • Maintain detailed patient records, documenting all procedures, diagnoses, treatments, and progress.
