About The Position

The Retention Counselor at Fayetteville State University plays a crucial role in enhancing student success by providing guidance and support in academic planning, registration, and enrollment processes. This position aims to improve retention and graduation rates by equipping students with the necessary skills and knowledge to navigate their educational journey effectively. The counselor will also participate in various student engagement programs and serve as a backup during peak service times.

Requirements

  • Earned graduate degree in higher education or related field.
  • Experience working with student success programs in a higher education setting.
  • Knowledge of best practices in coaching and advising.
  • Familiarity with student success platforms like Banner and Canvas.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and student success technology.
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to respond effectively to unexpected events and adjust plans as needed.
  • Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated understanding of the developmental needs of college students.
  • Three to five years of experience advising first-year students, particularly exploratory/undecided students.
  • Experience in advising and programming for special populations.
  • Proficiency with student success management systems such as EAB Navigate and Degree Works.
  • At least two years of experience working with student populations as an advisor or peer coach.

Responsibilities

  • Assist students in developing knowledge and skills for academic and career exploration.
  • Evaluate and track student progress toward graduation.
  • Address advising, registration, and enrollment needs to increase retention rates.
  • Participate in special programs such as new student orientation and open house.
  • Serve as a backup in the Bronco One Stop central services during peak times.
  • Serve on committees as appointed by the supervisor.
