About The Position

Assists the Assistant Director in leading retail pharmacists; cultivating collaboration, enthusiasm, and mutual respect. Acts as representative of clinical practice area through involvement and leadership in teaching, educational, supervisory, and quality improvement activities. Maintains subject matter expertise in assigned workflow and/or patient population in order to effectively communicate with team members, clinic staff, and manufacturers. Responsible for checking prepared medications, overseeing dispensing of prescriptions from the pharmacy, and completing clinical patient review for safety and accuracy. Provides safe, efficient, high quality, patient-centered, and evidence-based medication services to all patients. In cooperation with other pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, acts as a resource and provides answers to drug information questions for patients and family members, pharmacists, nurses, physicians, advanced practice providers, medical students, undergraduate and graduate pharmacy students, and other associated hospital personnel. Screens for drug-drug, drug-herb/dietary supplement, drug-allergy, drug-food, drug-disease state, and drug-laboratory interactions. Submits insurance claims and communicates with insurance companies as necessary. Participates in appropriate hospital and/or departmental committees relevant to practice area. This position oversees the planning, organization, and evaluation of pharmaceutical services provided by retail pharmacists. Under the guidance of the Associate Director and Assistant Director of Retail Pharmacy assists in managing, guiding, coaching, and evaluating the work performance of retail pharmacists and technicians. This position also functions to coordinate all aspects of patients' pharmaceutical needs in OSUMC inpatient and outpatient areas. Duties include but are not limited to: medication order approval and distribution; assurance of appropriate dose, route, frequency and duration of therapy; patient medication profile review for drug-drug interactions, duplication of therapy, drug allergy interactions and appropriate regimens, patient counseling, disease state management, and coordination of patients' pharmaceutical needs with physicians and nurses. Patient population includes adult and geriatric patients. Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must be able to demonstrate medication dosing and identify pharmaceutical needs relative to the disease process and age. Must be able to effectively communicate with patients, other health care providers, and insurance companies. This position is also responsible for supervising technicians, undergraduate and graduate student teaching, and providing educational programs for hospital/clinic staff (physicians, nurses and pharmacy staff). As a subject matter expert, this position is responsible for educating pharmacist and technician staff on workflow, disease, and treatment updates and for precepting residents and students.

Requirements

  • Valid and unrestricted registered pharmacist in the State of Ohio
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college of pharmacy required
  • Experience in patient care and performing clinical oversight for the services provided is required
  • Performs professional, supervisory, and teaching functions outlined above
  • Continues to meet competency and licensure expectations of a retail pharmacist
  • Maintains clinical privileges through OSUWMC
  • Conducts experiential and/or didactic teaching of pharmacy students (including interns), pharmacy residents, and permanent staff
  • Professional instruction to the hospital and clinical staff or other professional organizations
  • Participates in and presents intra-departmental continuing education programs in addition to professional presentations to local community groups, the College of Pharmacy, other hospitals and pharmacy departments, and professional meetings

Nice To Haves

  • Residency and/or a minimum of 3-5 years of academic medical center outpatient pharmacy experience preferred (e.g. PGY1 and PGY2 residency)
