About The Position

North 40 Outfitters in Great Falls, MT, West Location, is looking to hire a Full-Time Salaried Fly Shop Manager to join our team. As a Fly Shop Manager at North 40, you’ll lead the way in creating a welcoming, knowledgeable, and memorable experience for every customer who walks through our doors. This role is all about rolling up your sleeves, leading by example, and keeping things running strong in a fast-paced retail environment. You’ll bring energy, optimism, and a genuine passion for fly fishing and retail, while driving sales, protecting company assets, and developing a team that’s engaged, capable, and proud of the work they do. Maintaining store standards and building strong connections with both customers and the local community are key to success in this role. This full-time position requires the ability to work all scheduled shifts between the business hours of Mon-Sat 7 am to 7 pm, and Sunday 9 am to 5 pm. As this is a managerial position it is not uncommon to work 50+ hours a week, part of which may include outside networking. This shift can include working weekends and certain holidays and will require flexibility in scheduling based on business needs.

  • Entomology of the river system and its seasonal hatch patterns
  • Understanding of the flow rates and watershed
  • Ability to help educate on local fishing access, boat launch, float distance/planning
  • Familiarity and knowledge of the fly fishing industry and equipment
  • Passion and willingness to represent and champion The House of Fly and The Fly Project
  • Industry knowledge on “staple” fly fishing brands: Simms, Winston, Loop, Sage, Hatch, Ross Reels, Hairline, etc.
  • Knowledge of visual displays, timely management of inventory and taking pride in the look of a clean, sharply merchandised fly shop
  • Build relationships and participate in the local fly fishing community

  • Ability to work well with others, and lead and motivate a team
  • A willingness to lead by example
  • Skilled in leadership, sales generation, strategic planning, business acumen, time management and general retail software proficiency
  • Willingness to relocate if needed
  • Understanding of correct lifting and loading techniques. Physical ability to lift and carry 0-25 lbs. continuously, 25-45 lbs. frequently, and 45-65 lbs. occasionally, and team lift anything over 65 lbs. Spending 100% of work time on your feet, including use of ladders, rolling staircases and pallet jacks.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the purchasing and sales of fly inventory
  • Support and participation in all house of fly marketing efforts inside and outside of the store
  • Assisting in building a national fly fishing presence which may require travel
  • Resolving team issues in a timely and professional manner
  • Ability to delegate and assign tasks appropriately
  • Responsible for managing staffing needs in the fly shop
