About The Position

The Pharmacy Technician II, under the direction and supervision of a pharmacist, will assist in the preparation, dispensing, charging and delivery of medications and front-end items to patients. Patients served include all age groups. Responsibilities: Daily contact with patients, nursing personnel, physicians and other ancillary UPMC Pinnacle employees. Demonstrates flexibility in work assignment and location. Completes any additional projects assigned by Pharmacy Leadership. Consistently communicates in a courteous and professional manner when interacting with customers and coworkers. Respects confidentiality and established boundaries when providing information. Consistently reports any issues or problems to a manager as soon as possible. Consistently demonstrates professionalism by displaying flexibility, positive attitude, respect for individuals and commitment to the organization, department, profession, and patient. Consistently delivers high quality, accurate work in a timely manner. Effectively utilizes resources and identifies opportunities to improve efficiencies in the department. Consistently demonstrates leadership. Acts as a role model for fellow technicians in performing daily tasks as well as initiating supplemental duties. Performs other duties as assigned. Understanding and compliance with handling procedures of all controlled substances. Displays teamwork by actively supporting department changes and willingly and proactively assists co-workers. Assures work for each shift is completed prior to departure. Assists Pharmacist and Medication Transition Coordinators with medication delivery and patient care. Participates in special projects as required or assigned. Assists in training new employees and pharmacy students with regard to work procedures. Maintains pharmacy in clean, orderly and safe manner by restocking shelves, cleaning workstations, returning medications to stock, etc. Performs related duties as required or assigned. Promotes Mission, Vision, and Values of UPMC. Participates in Performance Improvement as it relates to the department Accurate preparation, labeling and packaging of medications for dispensing under the supervision of the pharmacist. Prepare and compound medications (i.e. solutions, creams, and ointments) under the supervision of the pharmacist. Assists patients at drop off and or pick up and obtains pertinent patient information for in inclusion into electronic profile. Answers telephone using appropriate verbiage, screen and triage inquiries. Interprets, performs necessary pharmaceutical calculations and enters prescriptions into the pharmacy information system for pharmacist review. Completes all necessary documentation. Communicates with third party payers to obtain adjudication of prescription claims. Demonstrates an understanding and ability to use current equipment including robotics, electronic workflow systems, printers, computers, fax machines, telephones, POS, etc. Reviews, transmits, and receives wholesaler orders as required. Assists in proper inventory maintenance of drugs and supplies ordered and stored by the pharmacy. Assists in the creation, handling, and maintenance of a variety of pharmacy records, to promote efficient operation of the pharmacy and assure regulatory compliance. Inspects medications in assigned areas (i.e. prescription and front-end). Removes expired products and completes documentation.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) obtained and maintained including required continuing education credits.
  • Minimum of twelve months retail pharmacy experience.
  • Employee must regularly perform at least outpatient medication filling, restocking, non-sterile compounding, repackaging, and controlled substance handling.
  • Must take a written advance operational test annually and must achieve a score of 80%25. This written test will consist of questions/scenarios in all areas of pharmacy technician practice.
