About The Position

The Meijer Store Leadership Internship is a dynamic 11-week program designed to immerse students in leading retail teams to achieve real business outcomes. This experience is ideal for students who thrive in leadership roles and are passionate about guiding teams toward shared goals. Interns will gain hands-on experience driving business results, participate in professional development workshops, network with senior leaders, and deliver a final presentation to Meijer executives. The internship is structured in two phases: the first phase focuses on building foundational retail knowledge and leadership competencies, while the second phase involves stepping into an official leadership role, gaining experience in driving team engagement, customer experience, and business performance. Interns who demonstrate strong leadership capabilities may be considered for full-time opportunities and structured development programs.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program.
  • Ability to work flexible shifts to gain exposure to the full operation of the store.
  • Demonstrated leadership potential through school, work, or extracurricular activities.
  • Curiosity, initiative, and a desire to learn and grow through hands-on experience.
  • Interest in leading teams and making a positive impact on others.
  • Ability to build relationships and collaborate with diverse team members.
  • Comfortable communicating with others and open to feedback and coaching.
  • Motivated by achieving goals and contributing to team success.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in retail is preferred but not required.
  • Eager to develop the skills and mindset required for future leadership roles.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and support team members across assigned departments, ensuring alignment with store goals and operational priorities.
  • Assist in managing department-level performance metrics including sales, shrink, and labor.
  • Model and reinforce fast, friendly, and inclusive customer service.
  • Mentor and coach team members to exceed service and performance expectations.
  • Facilitate onboarding and training for new team members.
  • Collaborate with department leaders to identify opportunities for improvement and implement solutions.
  • Communicate regularly with customers and team members to assess needs and resolve issues.
  • Promote a safe, respectful, and inclusive work environment.
  • Demonstrate adaptability by working a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends.
  • Take the initiative in leading daily huddles and contributing to store-wide initiatives.
