About The Position

For Garden’s Sake is a family-owned garden center and landscaping company, in operation since 1999. They are continually growing, offering customers a one-stop shop for plants, landscape design/installation, and lawn maintenance services. Working with them provides a beautiful, natural environment with teammates focused on individual growth through training and learning opportunities. The company prioritizes employee care as much as customer care and features resident goats, chickens, and ducks. The position is for a passionate and knowledgeable Department Sales Lead for the retail garden center's Houseplants & Tropicals Department. The team helps customers cultivate their dream garden oasis by teaching, advising, and inspiring. The role requires enthusiasm for plants, comprehensive department knowledge, and retail expertise to maintain target margins and increase sales. This is a key, full-time, year-round position.

Requirements

  • Very strong knowledge of plants/products in your department, including care and maintenance
  • High level of technical understanding related to horticulture and retail garden center operations
  • Passion for customer service, retail, and driving sales
  • Exceptional customer service skills with the ability to communicate calmly, clearly, and professionally (both verbally and in writing) with customers and staff
  • Teamwork mindset and willingness to be flexible and jump in where needed to assist
  • Keen eye for detail, motivation to meet and exceed goals, interest in the numbers (sales goals, margins, budgets)
  • Proficiency in POS systems and Google suite
  • Ability to safely lift 50+ pounds and perform physical tasks, including prolonged standing, bending, kneeling, and walking on gravel and slopping ground
  • Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions

  • Background in retail, specifically garden centers, strongly preferred

Responsibilities

  • Strong focus on sales - Leads are outgoing and enthusiastic about customer service and making sales, and are readily available to customers on the sales floor
  • Engage with customers directly to assist with plant and product selection, offering expert advice and knowledge
  • Create a welcoming and informative environment to enhance the customer experience and drive sales
  • Provide backup support for cashiering as needed
  • Provide recommendations for and place product orders as required
  • Oversee product placement and ensure attractive merchandising to maximize sales potential
  • Receive and unload new inventory, assess product quality, tag plants, and arrange them in designated areas
  • Maintain department cleanliness and organization, ensuring products are well-displayed and easily accessible
  • Regularly update department signage to reflect current promotions and information
  • Train team members, fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment
  • Delegate responsibilities to support staff in a professional and clear manner to ensure efficient operations
  • Assist with any additional tasks or responsibilities to support the overall success of the department
