About The Position

The Des Moines Register/desmoinesregister.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, seeks a retail-focused reporter who can lead coverage of this consumer-focused topic. This reporter should be equally comfortable diving into the boardroom decisions of Hy-Vee, an Iowa-based supermarket chain, and interviewing small business owners, who are coping with the whims of the economy. They will bring readers news of the consumer-oriented grocery beat and keep Iowa readers aware of trends, store openings and closings and online activities. This reporter will file quick stories of comings and goings off the news, but also provide explanatory, narrative and watchdog stories, retail and ecommerce and shopping trend stories, and consumer scams and rip-off stories. The ideal candidate will provide thoughtful analysis of complex issues and form deep connections with people in the community, from executives to shoppers. This reporter should be able to create photo and video work to expand their journalism, working alongside the Register’s social and multimedia staffers. They should also be willing to experiment and innovate to reach audiences.  We expect anyone who works with us to constantly improve their skills. We offer internal and Gannett-wide training programs. This reporter will work with experienced editors and occasionally partner with other veteran reporters on projects.  Des Moines is a growing capital city that has become a magnet for young professionals, attracted by an expanding job base and a vibrant cultural and arts scene. Requirements

  • Bachelor's or master’s in communications, journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Three years of experience in professional journalism, writing, and reporting.
  • Understanding metrics, social media, and SEO.
  • Solid news judgment.
  • Self-motivation and self-direction.
  • Top-notch planning, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and excel under intense deadline pressure in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Command of media law and principles of ethical conduct.
  • This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
