The Respiratory Therapy Technician at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center plays a crucial role in the respiratory care team, working under the direct supervision of a Respiratory Care Therapist or Registered Respiratory Therapist. This position involves assessing the need for oxygen and aerosol equipment, setting up and operating this equipment, and maintaining it in compliance with manufacturer and departmental guidelines. The technician is responsible for ensuring that all equipment is used cost-effectively and identifying opportunities for improvement in equipment and supply usage. In addition to equipment management, the technician assesses the need for various respiratory therapy procedures, including nebulizer treatments, metered-dose inhaler treatments, incentive spirometry, postural drainage, and continuous positive airway pressure treatments. They administer these procedures in accordance with clinical standards and departmental policies, while also communicating any necessary changes in therapy to the healthcare team. Compassion and sensitivity towards patients and their families are essential, as is the ability to prioritize work effectively to maximize productivity. The role also includes performing bedside diagnostic procedures such as pulmonary function testing, pulse oximetry, and capnometry, and communicating results to the healthcare team. The technician is responsible for obtaining arterial blood samples and performing whole blood analysis, including blood gas analysis, while adhering to departmental standards. Education is another key component of the role, as the technician assesses the educational needs of patients and families and provides instruction as necessary. Additionally, the technician is trained to perform cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and assess the need for, set up, operate, and maintain ventilators as required.
