About The Position

With limited supervision, the Respiratory Therapy Shift Leader (RTSL) works in collaboration and reports directly to the Respiratory Director and Manager. The Respiratory Therapy Shift Leader is responsible for continuous staff supervision, operations management, emergency response and coordination. This role covers emergency response, on -call, and/or critical staffing as necessary. This position provides recommendations regarding policies and procedures, guidelines, educational materials, evidence based practice, process and quality improvement initiatives as required. The RTSL assists the Respiratory Manager and Director with the orientation, scheduling, development, performance feedback, and disciplinary process for care team members. Acts as a patient, family, interdisciplinary resource to addresses concerns, supports problem resolution and oversees care. This position ensures the delivery of high quality Respiratory Care Service throughout the medical center. Assists in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with pulmonary disorders. Collects and analyzes sputum, blood, and breath specimens to determine levels of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and other gases. Also measures the lung capacity of a patient to determine if there is impaired function. Administers treatment prescribed by a physician for the care of patients with abnormalities associated with the process of breathing. Assumes primary responsibility for respiratory care treatments, including oversight of respiratory therapist.

Requirements

  • Minimum qualifications include graduation from a program approved by the Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoArc) or a successor accrediting authority.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred in a field related to position or an Associate's degree in Respiratory Care from a program approved by the Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoArc) or a successor accrediting authority.
  • Graduate with certificate of completion from a two or four-year NBRC approved program in respiratory care.
  • Three years of work experience in the practice of respiratory care specific to acute care delivery in specified patient populations, with at least one year of tertiary level respiratory care work experience.
  • Leadership experience as a shift, team, educator or departmental leader is required.
  • Work and/or educational experience centered on promoting group/team working relations is required.
  • Extensive knowledge of the department's patient population, health care trends, community and regional resources and service availability to these populations.

  • AAS in Respiratory Care from an AMA approved School of Respiratory Therapy.
  • Licensure/Certification: Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC). Licensed by the Board of Medical Examiners of S.C.
  • Four years of practice in respiratory care specific to acute care delivery in specified patient populations, with at least one year of tertiary level respiratory care work experience.
  • Leadership experience as a shift, team, educator or departmental leader is required.
  • Work and/or educational experience centered on promoting group/team working relations is required.
  • Extensive knowledge of the department's patient population, health care trends, community and regional resources and service availability to these populations.
  • Demonstrated ability to role model and establish effective collegial working relationships and communications with diverse groups and individuals, medical staff, and other healthcare disciplines.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong time management, project management, technical, critical thinking, and clinical skills are required.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification in a specialty area strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements preferred.
