About The Position

The Respiratory Therapy Extern position at Advocate Health is designed for individuals currently enrolled in an accredited or approved program in Respiratory Therapy. This part-time role involves performing routine and basic level respiratory therapy procedures under the observation of a licensed respiratory therapist. The extern will be responsible for organizing and maintaining respiratory therapy equipment, collecting and cleaning equipment, and completing annual hospital competencies. The position requires knowledge of patient care appropriate to various age groups and the ability to assess and interpret patient data. Physical demands include lifting, pushing, and pulling, as well as the use of personal protective equipment due to potential exposure to hazards.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited or approved program in Respiratory Therapy.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Ability to function independently.

Nice To Haves

  • Wisconsin externs must transition into graduate respiratory therapist position immediately.
  • Illinois externs' status shall not exceed 3 years from date of enrollment in an approved program.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and basic level respiratory therapy procedures including oxygen therapy, pulse oximetry, aerosol therapy, and incentive spirometry under supervision.
  • Organize and maintain supply of respiratory therapy equipment and supplies as needed.
  • Collect, clean, and reassemble equipment according to proper procedures and infection prevention guidelines.
  • Complete annual hospital competencies and learn new equipment, supplies, procedures, and processes.
  • Perform patient positioning and transporting duties, utilizing proper lifting techniques.
