About The Position

The Respiratory Therapist is responsible for providing pulmonary care in accordance with specific provider orders, department policies and procedures. The Respiratory Therapist administers pulmonary care and life support to patients with deficiencies and abnormalities of the pulmonary system, performing diagnostic tests and therapeutic procedures related to the pulmonary system. The Respiratory Therapist collaborates with the interdisciplinary care team to ensure high-quality, patient-centered care across a variety of clinical settings including inpatient and outpatient. Hou rs: .6 FTE - 24 Hours per week 8 hour variable shifts - Monday through Friday

Requirements

  • Demonstrates eligibility for employment in the U.S.
  • Associates degree in Respiratory Therapy from an accredited program required
  • Current Registered Respiratory Therapist licensure in the State of Wisconsin
  • BLS certification is required upon hire
  • Must be able to achieve ACLS and PALS certification within six months of hire
  • Minimum 2 years previous acute care hospital experience required
  • Must possess a cell phone that interfaces with the organization’s secure messaging system

Responsibilities

  • Advocate for patients’ rights, preferences, and needs, ensuring that they receive high-quality, compassionate care that is tailored to their individual circumstances
  • Project a professional demeanor and appearance while maintaining the confidentiality of the patient, coworkers, and the organization, as appropriate
  • Plans, prepares and administers respiratory therapy treatments including IPPB, aerosol, chest physical therapy, incentive spirometry, CPAP, BIPAP therapy, and sputum inductions, in accordance with established policies and procedures
  • Performs arterial punctures to obtain arterial blood samples for blood gas analysis, and understands the possible complications and contraindications associated with the procedure
  • Airway maintenance, oral and nasal suctioning, and mechanical airway ventilation, and insertion of artificial airway
  • Provides support for or independently performs diagnostic pulmonary tests, including bronchoscopies
  • Provides developmentally appropriate care to support patients of all ages during their hospitalization
  • Develops individualized teaching plans based on the patient's assessed learning needs
  • Administers respiratory therapy treatments, and nebulized medications, while understanding the purpose of each and the possible side effects associated with each
  • Utilizes the electronic health record, departmental forms, flow charts, and logbooks accurately and consistently in accordance with established protocols and documentation standards
  • Demonstrates knowledge of specialized examinations and tests associated with respiratory therapy and understand the reasons for the individual patient’s needs and respiratory therapy plan
  • Demonstrates competence and provides for the cleaning, sterilization, assembly and maintenance of equipment and stocking of supplies utilized by respiratory therapy
  • Educate patients and families on respiratory care techniques, home therapies, and equipment use
  • Provides thorough instructions and appropriate referrals for home care to ensure safe transition and continued respiratory management
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record per hospital and department protocols
  • Provides EKG testing support when appropriate and upon request
  • Ensure infection control protocols and safety standards are followed in all aspects of patient care
  • Respond to emergency situations using appropriate interventions
  • Supports multidisciplinary quality assessment and improvement activities and assists manager in updating and maintaining Respiratory Therapy policies
  • Use the organization's secure messaging platform in accordance with departmental protocols, including timely receipt and responses to communications
  • Perform other duties as assigned
