Under the supervision of a licensed physician, the Respiratory Therapist actively participates in the monitoring and treatment of patients with cardiopulmonary and respiratory disease. This role assumes primary responsibility for respiratory care therapeutic treatments and diagnostic procedures. Diagnostic responsibilities include arterial blood gas analysis sampling and analysis, physical assessment, and pulmonary function testing. Respiratory therapists are expected to consult with physicians and other healthcare staff to help develop and modify patient care plans. Therapeutic responsibilities encompass the setup and monitoring of therapeutic gases (e.g., oxygen), administering medications via inhalation, performing bronchial hygiene therapy, providing cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, initiating and supporting breathing apparatus (e.g., mechanical ventilator management), inserting and maintaining artificial airways, and administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
