About The Position

This position oversees technical operations for the Department of Respiratory Care, including equipment and supply acquisitions, support of quality improvement initiatives, and delivery of advanced respiratory care services. Collaborates across disciplines to promote regulatory compliance, staff competency, service excellence, and safe, effective patient care in a complex healthcare environment. This is a 100%25 8-hour day shift position with hours of 0730-1600 (negotiable) Monday-Friday. Position requires administrative call on weekends and holidays are distributed on a rotational basis.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in respiratory care or health-related science or an equivalent combination of related education and experience is required.
  • Possess a current State of Iowa Respiratory Care Practitioner license.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
  • Possess and maintain active membership in the National Board for Respiratory Care.
  • Possess a current CPR certification card.
  • 3+ years of critical care experience in Respiratory Care in a tertiary setting
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience developing, implementing and evaluating clinical programs, including staff education and quality improvement
  • Experience with grant/abstract writing and publication.
  • COPD, Asthma, Smoking Cessation educator experience
  • Certified Adult Critical Care Specialty (RRT-ACCS) and/or Neonatal/Pediatric Respiratory Care Specialist (RRT-NPS)
  • ACLS and PALs certified
  • Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist

Responsibilities

  • Oversees departmental technical operations, including equipment evaluation, acquisition, and supply management.
  • Partner with education coordinator to support the assessment, implementation, and staff training related to new products within the department.
  • May deliver respiratory therapies or perform diagnostic procedures as needed and per provider order.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Director and Manager.
  • Provides staff education and training related to clinical procedures, emergency management, regulatory requirements, and electronic medical record applications.
  • Collaborates with Biomedical Engineering, Materials Management, Engineering Services, Nursing, Procurement, and other departments; participates in multidisciplinary initiatives and projects.
  • Participates in the development and revision of policies and procedures to promote staff competency in alignment with Joint Commission standards.
  • Assists in oversight of Blood Gas Laboratory operations, including instrument maintenance, quality control, and regulatory compliance.
  • Oversees intradepartmental functions such incident report review and follow-up, and equipment and supply evaluation.
  • Coach and mentor staff while delivering constructive feedback to support clinical competency and professional growth.
  • Ensure staff are compliant with UI policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Provides shift supervision, including day-to-day operations as officer of the day (OD) as needed.
