About The Position

Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system at UChicago Medicine, Ingalls Memorial Hospital as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) at our Harvey, Illinois location. In this role, you will work with physicians/nursing to access, implement, and perform respiratory care procedures for our patients. Under the direction of the Director and/or Supervisor of Respiratory Care Services, the Respiratory Therapist is responsible for the coordination of and performing direct respiratory care for patients, utilizing concepts of respiratory care practices for all patient age groups of neonatal through adult as specified by respiratory care policy and procedures. They will serve as a resource, preceptor, and mentor for other health care professionals. They will demonstrate skills and the knowledge necessary to provide respiratory care procedures.

Requirements

  • Completion of an AMA approved RRT program
  • Basic Life Support Certification through The American Heart Association
  • Must achieve Certified Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential from The National Board for Respiratory Care within 6 months of hire
  • Copy of academic diploma or transcript
  • Therapist must have NBRC RRT credentials to be trained for critical care

Responsibilities

  • Maintains departmental productivity and efficient operation of the department per established standards.
  • Exhibits timely, satisfactorily completion of patient assignment with minimal assistance.
  • Incurs no overtime unless requested and approved by lead therapist.
  • Explains procedures and protocols of the therapy to the patient and family members.
  • Maintains one on one relationship with patient during course of care.
  • Follows proper identification procedures prior to giving care.
  • Reads prescriptions prepared by physicians to determine indications for treatment.
  • Able to determine the most appropriate modality of respiratory care for patient and inform physician when indicated.
  • Notifies nurse or physician of any adverse reaction.
  • Instructs patient in proper breathing techniques.
  • Maintains information in the patients' chart and department records at all times.
  • Competent in radial and capillary blood gas punctures and proficient in blood gas interpretation.
  • Utilizes all monitoring and diagnostic equipment by following established procedures.
