As a team member in the delivery of respiratory services, and under medical direction, performs a wide range of procedures related to the care of patients with general and specialized respiratory-related needs of various age groups. Collaborates with other members of the health care team and uses clinical judgment skills to diagnose and treat the patient responses to actual or potential health conditions. Performs evaluation to determine respiratory care needs, and makes appropriate recommendations and changes in accordance with policy and protocol guidelines. Assesses effectiveness of treatment and accurately documents according to department and legal/regulatory standards. Performs point of care testing as required. Performs advanced evaluation, management and therapeutic procedures (interventions) for patients requiring respiratory assistance. Assesses effectiveness of intervention and accurately documents according to department and legal/regulatory standards. Completes and documents required education and competencies within designated timeframe. Maintains competency in areas of accountability. Accurate and timely completion of all necessary documentation and billing. Maintains all transport equipment in a state of constant readiness. Checks all equipment at the beginning of each shift, noting any discrepancy or malfunction. Should be able to troubleshoot all equipment, make certain that malfunctions are promptly reported and repaired. For Aero Med/NFAM, completes rotor wing/fixed wing checklist and ensures that aircraft is fully stocked and ready at the beginning of shift. For Neonatal and Pediatric Services, transport role encompasses pediatric and neonatal patients requiring transport (by ground or air) to Helen DeVos Children's Hospital. Facilitates a smooth transition for the patient to appropriate referral services / the next point of service / home and provides education to patients and families as it relates to respiratory issues. Instructs and trains other respiratory care staff, nursing and other medical personnel and students regarding patient needs and respiratory care services.
