About The Position

This position is a first line management position. It is responsible for the coordinator of care of patients and families and accountable for scheduling, coordinating and maintaining the resources necessary on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. In conjunction with the department manager, the incumbent will plan, organize, direct and evaluate people and activities for the department to ensure high quality, cost-effective patient care. The incumbent has fiscal responsibility for resources that are defined during the budget process. The position’s primary focus is with employees, patient, families, physicians and key contributors from other department who impact the services of the department. The success of the department depends significantly on the incumbent’s ability to participate well with others and/or collaborate with other managers, dept. leaders and hospital stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Prior lead or supervisory experience (3 yrs minimum)
  • Clinical experience as a RCP (3 yrs minimum)
  • Experience in directing employees, assessing performance and managing staff and department operations preferred.
  • Ability to multi-task and problem solve.
  • Computer based skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and teaching ability.
  • Current RCP license.
  • BLS, PALS, NRP (Respiratory Shift Supervisor for Neonatal and Pediatric Units); BLS, ACLS, PALS (Respiratory Shift Supervisor for Adult Units)
  • RRT Credential (required for new hire; within 12 months for internal)
  • NPS Credential (required for new hire; preferred for internal)
  • ACCS Credential (required for new hire; preferred for internal)
  • Bachelors Degree (required for new hire; preferred for internal)

Responsibilities

  • Directs the assignment of staff.
  • Ensures that regular, float and temporary staff have appropriate assignments based on the individual’s clinical expertise and individual staff development plan.
  • Accountable for the matching of staff to assignment and intervention for special situations when staff member does no have all unit specific competencies.
  • Coordinates the patient care and staff assignments across various units in LBM/MCH.
  • Conducts or participates in staff meetings.
  • Conducts Daily Huddles.
  • Directly intervenes and acts on issues effecting quality of care and/or patient safety.
  • Escalates department issues to department manager as needed.
  • Investigates employee and patient care related issues, documents investigation and takes appropriate action to resolve conflicts.
  • Evaluates staff.
  • Counsels employees on performance, develop action plans, and initiates corrective action processing according to the medical centers disciplinary action guidelines.
  • May suspend or discharge staff at the request of the manager.
  • Visits and rounds on patients to assess customer service and takes action to improve patient satisfaction.
  • Ensures the completion of UORs and interviews staff to ensure accuracy of documentation and to determine actions required to prevent in the future.
  • Supports the shift operations and clinical delivery by receiving report on all patients on respiratory service, responsible in ensuring that assignments are made to ensure clinical progression of the staff.
  • Assigns meals and breaks and ensures that staff takes meals and breaks.
  • Approves staff missing meals or breaks.
  • Coaches and counsels staff unable to take meals and breaks and provides resources to allow staff to take meals and breaks.
  • Ensures that patient documentation is completed by all members of the staff.
  • Attends daily patient placement meetings or delegates attendance.
  • Participates in hospital committees and projects as assigned.
  • Manages staff attendance and schedule.
  • Records schedule changes including sick or absent calls and other schedule requests.
  • Ensures that schedule changes are reflected on ActiveStaffer and other programs used in the department.
  • Monitors equipment and supplies and ensures that appropriate inventory levels are maintained to ensure continuous care delivery.
  • Manages the distribution and inventory of supplies and ensure patient safety by processing equipment not meeting specifications to bio-med.
  • Evaluates new and/or proposed equipment and makes recommendations for acquisition.
  • Reviews and process timecards.
  • Monitor and report activity data.
  • Facilitate completion of HR requirements for survey, license and CPR certification documentation and employee health requirements.
  • Participates in interviewing applicants for department positions and makes recommendations for hiring.
  • May suspend or discharge staff at the request.
  • Assists in development, review and revision of policy and procedure manuals and other policies that affect the department.
  • Interprets and implements hospital policy and procedure.
  • Ensures changes in policy and procedure if necessary and communicates changes in policy and procedure to staff.
  • Ensures that input on improved unit operations is communicated and that steps are taken to make changes to improve dept. operations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
