About The Position

To be fully engaged in providing No Harm / Quality, Customer Experience, and Stewardship by: showing clinical proficiency in the adult, pediatric and the neonatal critical care areas.They will be responsible for performing respiratory care appropriate to the age of the patient for all skills applicable to the skills required of an Advanced Therapist. They should have a thorough understanding of all respiratory care modalities and be capable of making judgment decisions and recommendations to physicians pertaining to respiratory care modalities.They should be able to evaluate these techniques and report their findings to the responsible physician. They should function as a resource for all staff on respiratory care procedures and will facilitate education, orientation and competency check-off of all Respiratory Care staff.Will provide other department's education and orientation to respiratory care modalities as needed.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Respiratory Care
  • Current license from Florida DOH as Registered Respiratory Therapist.
  • Must hold current AHA BLS Healthcare Provider Completion Card prior to start date and maintain.
  • Current American Heart Association ACLS, PALS, and NRP cards.
  • Must have good leadership, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Must have good organizational skills and prioritizing skills
  • Ability to maintain positive working relationships with all levels within the organizations.
  • Analytical abilities required recognizing and resolving problems requiring technical or clinical interventions.
  • Demonstrates proficiency with the computer software, word processing, graphics, spreadsheets, GroupWise and Microsoft Office
  • Five years of progressive clinical experience in intensive care setting with at least one year at current facility.
  • Must be able to withstand working up to 12 hour shifts consisting mostly of walking and standing.
  • Must be able to participate in prolonged CPR procedures.
  • Must have visual acuity and hand eye coordination necessary to perform clinical tasks.
  • Ability to bend, stoop and assist lifting of patients as care requires
  • Ability to auscultate and assess breath and cardiac sounds.
  • Must be able to move quickly in crowded conditions and work with patients with manylines and machines attached.
  • May be exposed to bio-hazardous waste, dust, aerosolized medication and unknown or communicable disease.
  • Must be able to provide a professional appearance and wear designated uniforms.
  • Must be able to work effectively in stressful environments with patients, visitors and staff.
  • Must be able to make quick decisions concerning patient care and appropriate therapy.
  • Must be able to respond appropriately to life threatening situations
  • Must be able to collect and interpret data and educate patients with various levels of understanding according to age.
  • Must be able to prioritize and have good organizational ability.

Responsibilities

  • Completes department education and other responsibilities by due dates.
  • Assists director with staff selection/hiring.
  • Effectively engages staff leading to high performance work teams within the Respiratory Services Department.
  • Builds trust, commitment, and accountability with staff.
  • Complies with all governmental agency requirements to maintain licensure or accreditation for staff or facility, (i.e. Joint Commission, CLIA, ACHA, CAP).
  • Demonstrate leadership by showing commitment to HF I-CARE values and to department.

  • Demonstrates ability to perform all procedures required for NICU, and Labor & delivery and ability to initiate, troubleshoot, discontinue and manage IABP modalities.
  • Provide monthly education opportunities for all Respiratory associates.
  • Serves as department clinical expert in all areas of Respiratory Care.
  • Researches new RT equipment and provides instruction for all new equipment before placed in use.
  • Revise, compile, standardize and continually update the orientation manual and competency checklist for the staff of the Respiratory department.
  • Establishes a system in which current and accurate records of staff's mandatory education requirements, competencies and certifications are located and easily accessible for management.
  • Coordinates annual skills fair.
  • Increases staff development by providing pertinent in-service and updates relative to clinical practices, utilizes available resources to improve individual staff member knowledge base/skill level and its success is measured by an increase in staff knowledge and improved quality patient outcomes.
  • Assists staff members in obtaining necessary skills and qualifications for specialized certifications.
  • Works in conjunction with other departments to improve staff development within Health First and the community.
  • Participates in policy and procedure development and implementation with other departments, disciplines and Health First facilities
  • Maintains an active role in Joint Commission readiness for the department and other Health First Teams.
  • Function as a preceptor, or arrange for preceptors for students.
  • Demonstrate leadership in respiratory care by maintaining relative certifications, continuing education, and participation in one or more hospital committees, PI studies, professional or community organizations
  • Coordinate the indicator monitoring and performance measures for Respiratory Care.
  • Duties include monitoring performance through data collection, analyze current performance and improve and sustain performance improvement measures.
  • Assist with data collection, analysis and preparation of reports to be presented at appropriate committees or groups.
  • Maintains responsibility for baseline functional knowledge and skill in commonly used clinical applications.
  • Serves as a member of the Respiratory Therapy Leadership Team and participates fully in all team decisions.
  • Provides clinical recommendations based on research findings and promote the development of clinical research based upon assessed need.
  • Provides the respiratory component to care for Continuum of Care Teams to meet Core Measures.
  • Represents Respiratory Care in all interdisciplinary teams to improve patient care and outcomes throughout the hospital systems.
  • Acts as liaison for physician's when developing or implementing programs.
  • Has oversight of Blood Gas Laboratory and assures that all regulatory requirements are completed in a timelyfashion.
  • Documents care according to policy by random check.
  • Provides correct procedure to correct patient by checking two patient identifiers.
  • Maintains equipment in good working order and troubleshoots when necessary; reports all malfunctioning equipment to appropriate area/associate with documentation of problem.
  • Maintains a clean, neat, safe work environment at all times.
  • Thorough documentation, including patient care, interdisciplinary Plan of Care, patient education, and charges appropriately for care provided.
  • Completes shift duties and other assigned tasks in a timely manner.
  • Gives report to oncoming shift on all patients and procedures, and assures completion of workload before leaving.
  • Medication safety- removes only one patient's medication at a time from Pyxis system.
  • Patient identification - Uses Pyxis med slip to appropriately identify two patient identifiers.
  • Hand-off communication - reads back all verbal and telephone orders, reports patient information to the appropriate associate in a timely manner, follows established approach to reporting including an opportunity to ask and respond to questions.

  • Communicates effectively to educate patients, family and staff on Respiratory Care procedures.
  • Maintains confidentiality in all dealings with patients and staff.
  • Attends a minimum of 10 monthly staff meetings.
  • Charges appropriately for care provided.
  • Effectively communicates with patients, physicians and staff, work as a team player, contribute to cost effectiveness and work efficiently.
  • Be a good steward of all hospital equipment and supplies and promotes same with others.
  • Evaluates new products and procedures to provide safe quality care while providing cost savings over currently used products and procedures.
  • Will demonstrate competency of all core competencies for the Respiratory Clinical Specialist and Advanced Therapist on the Annual Competency Skills Checklist.
