Department: Respiratory Care Works under the supervision of the Department Assistant Director, Supervisor, and upon the orders of a physician. Performs all functions and procedures as outlined in the Policy and Procedure manual of the Respiratory Care Department. This includes, but is not limited to, setting up and operating various types of respiratory care equipment, emergency services, minor preventative maintenance, bedside diagnostics, patient instruction, delivery of other associated therapeutic procedures. Should be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his/her unit. Performs other duties as assigned. Will be available at all times to the NICU. May participate in intubation of the neonate after successful completion of approved training course. May be a member of the transport team. Coordinates with Laboratory the quality control of I-STAT. May obtain samples from line, e.g. UA, UV, arterial lines. Perform lead duties in NICU. Acts as a resource for other staff. Responds to all C-sections, any high-risk deliveries and code pink/emergencies in NICU and SRMC areas. Performs Respiratory Care procedures in accordance with all standing policies and procedures. Participates in the interdisciplinary approach to patient care. May attend NICU interdisciplinary patient care meetings, Respiratory Task Force meetings, and Conferences. Should be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Sets up and maintains various types of respiratory care equipment. Institutes and monitors use/efficiency of oxygen therapy. Maintains accurate patient care documentation and departmental records. Participates in patient and their family education. Assists with the maintenance of adequate stock levels of respiratory disposable equipment. Assists in processing equipment for decontamination. Assists other therapists in completion of assigned duties. Attends departmental in-services/staff meeting. Attends all required hospital-wide in-services. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Registered/Certified: Graduate from an AMA accredited 2-4 year Respiratory Care program.
  • Respiratory Care Practitioners (RCP’s) who are assigned to NICU will have additional training in neonatal respiratory care.
  • Additional training in neonatal respiratory care shall be demonstrated by: 1) Completion of a formal neonatal respiratory therapy course at an approved school of respiratory therapy that includes didactic and clinical course work (evidenced by school program Neonatal Resuscitation Program course syllabus) OR 2) Completion of a minimum of 20 hours of didactic and four weeks of precepted neonatal clinical experience in a hospital-based course at a facility with a NICU equivalent to a Regional or Community NICU.
  • Licensure: Registered/Certified: Must be licensed by the State of California to practice respiratory care and be registered or certified through the National Board of Respiratory Care.
  • BLS/Healthcare Provider status as per American Heart Association standards.
  • ACLS-Advanced Cardiac Life Support per American Heart Association Standards.
  • All RCPs providing services in the NICU shall have evidence of current successful completion of the Neonatal Resuscitation Program course of the American Academy of Pediatrics and American Heart Association.
  • Exposure to facets of Respiratory Care modalities in an AMA accredited Respiratory Care program.
