About The Position

Under the guidance of the Supervisor of Job Readiness and Civic Engagement, the Resource ESL Teacher teaches and provides instructional support within the guidelines established by the Organization and specific departments within this group. Work hours are on an as needed basis without commitment to a minimum. The purpose of this role is to serve on an “on call” or project-specific basis and for coverage of regular staff teachers and temporary shortages. When appropriate, a Resource ESL Teacher will be responsible for some administrative tasks to support the overall program including attendance tracking, new student registration, and participant outreach. Resource ESL Teachers support the overall outcomes of the RICS Education and Training team and can be assigned to a wide range of courses and curricula. Individual accountabilities and work volume will be established through the development of annual Success Objectives, within the framework outlined below. The Resource ESL Teacher leverages industry knowledge and best practices to promote the mission and vision of Heartland Human Care Services. Supports culture development and management efforts.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma is required.
  • Minimum two (2) years of work experience teaching or tutoring is required.
  • Ability and comfortability working with diverse populations.
  • Must be sufficiently flexible in background and demeanor to pick up a class in progress and adjust to diverse populations and skill levels.
  • Excellent communication skills. Strong networker, convener, relationship builder and communicator with experience collaborating with diverse work teams and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential and sensitive information possessing skills to handle situations in a professional and diplomatic manner.
  • A high degree of collaboration and emotional intelligence, self-motivation, and analytical ability.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer, Outlook/Exchange; Windows operating systems; and other software routinely used by Heartland Human Care Services.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to work independently and remain self-motivated with minimal direct supervision.
  • Strategic thought partnership and consultancy skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Relevant lived experience in refugee resettlement or forced migration will be considered.
  • Multilingual skills strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct instruction to English language learners.
  • Utilizes existing curriculum and, in collaboration with team, develops and refines curriculum.
  • Subjects may include ESL, Citizenship, Computer Skills, Vocational Training, Job Readiness, Adult Basic Education, High School Equivalency Exam Preparation and Family Literacy
  • Cultivates a welcoming, engaging, and supportive learning environment, online or in-person depending on program need.
  • Provides instruction online or in-person as dictated by the needs of the program and participants.
  • Collaborates with team members to ensure instructional continuity and adequate student instructional support is provided.
  • Tracks attendance at each session and may record individual and group progress as dictated by contract compliance and professional standards.
  • As schedules allow, administers pre/post-tests to students.
  • Completes intake interviews with new students.
  • Assists with program administrative duties during any non-instruction time as needed.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
