About The Position

Residual Manager Position Overview Responsible for marketing and daily movement of pole shavings, chips, green and dry culls, bark, etc. from pole peeling yards in the defined geographical area. This position is responsible for continual management of residual movement, development of new markets for by-products, and mediation of waste removal cost. This specific position will cover the SYP West (Lufkin or Louisiana).

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Forestry, Marketing, or related field; or equivalent combination of education and extensive experience
  • Experience: Transportation/Logistics, Marketing, Procurement, and Supervisory experience of multiple reports. Preferred Residuals Management experience at a regional level
  • License/Certification: Driver’s License
  • Negotiating Skills – extensive knowledge and ability to negotiate best vendor terms and pricing for budget and schedule requirements
  • Knowledge of residuals/chips/fuel/bark consumers within the designated geographical area of this role
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
  • Solid decision-making and strong analytical skills
  • Ability to manage problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the daily removal of residual materials from all pole peeling facilities in the designated geographical area including pole peeler shavings, sawdust, end trimmings, cutoffs, and untreated full length and broken cull poles.
  • Communicate with production supervisors and plant managers to understand production schedules, interruptions to residual flow, operating/loading hours, volumes and types of residuals produced, and budgets for waste removal.
  • Maintain contracts, negotiate volume and pricing, and improve relationships with current residuals markets, i.e., paper mills, pellet mills, landscape reuse customers, landfills, etc.
  • Coordinate and manage internal transfers of residual materials to facilities that utilize excess material from peelers in their boiler systems.
  • Obtain and maintain contracts/hauling agreements with contract trucking companies to ensure timely and consistent removal of residuals and cull material from Stella-Jones facilities. Coordinate daily on customer destinations and quota.
  • Facilitate communication with Stella-Jones Logistics group KME Trucking for peeling and treating facilities utilizing KEM trucks and drivers. Coordinate with KME dispatchers and truck drivers with information regarding customer destinations, quotas, optimization of truck and driver utilization between facilities and customers with backhaul and routes efficiency. Work with KME to utilize drivers for flatbed hauling during customer shutdowns, peeler outages, etc.
  • Ensure logical movement of residuals to internal and external customers to maximize truck efficiency, reduce hauling cost, and ensure quotas are met for all customers when material is available.
  • Develop Residual Customer base with un-utilized, new, and emerging markets i.e., new pellet mills, energy production facilities, wood fiber-based fuel producers, potential partnerships, new business lines, etc.
  • Research and seek outlets for residuals that are considered beneficial use/cover material and obtain necessary contracts or agreements for removal from peeling sites.
  • Work with EHS and Project Management on planning and evaluation for projects such as Curtain Burners to determine benefit, need, costs, estimates and quotes, air permit requirements, location, additional equipment/personnel need etc., where markets force alternative solutions to residual waste management.
  • Assist Resource, Operations, and QC in monitoring and tracking barkie wood quality and peeler yield to ensure lowest residual production possible. This includes but is not limited to barkie delivery rollout inspections and peeler studies.
  • Collect, maintain, and provide records of source location information to meet EUDR requirements for residual sales to customers requiring the information as a condition of sale.
  • Coordinate with Stella-Jones sustainability department on any issues pertaining to sustainability, sourcing certification requirements, etc.
  • Track and maintain records of residual volume and cost/margin by customer/outlet to analyze financial impact to waste and cull expense.
  • Assist operations management in forecasting and budgeting waste and cull expense related to residual production.
  • Represent the company as its eyes, ears, and point of contact at State-level industry meetings with residuals customers.
  • Provide accurate and updated information and recommendations regarding changes to residual consumption markets to aid in forecasting as well as short- and long-term planning, i.e., plant closure, mill conversions, new markets, etc.
  • Participate and contribute to EHS program.
  • Participate and contribute to ESG program.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
